February 27, 20188 yr Are those professions being vocal in fighting for their retirement, too? Are teachers are more important than the rest of state employees because they're more vocal?
February 27, 20188 yr I believe in the importance of teachers. But the American economy is built on supply and demand. When we run into a teaching shortage and wages need to be raised to attract them, I'm sure salaries will be raised. Right now i know of numerous people that have teaching degrees that cant get a job because the market is flooded. Nursing used to be the same way, now nursing is an attractive field because their pay is higher.
February 27, 20188 yr My husband and I are both retired teachers. I started teaching in 1978. I went into to teaching because I wanted to help make a difference in a child's life. To go into another field was not a option I even considered. I loved my job , not all people can say that. I am very proud to say I was a teacher. Beautiful, goldie! I, too, am proud to be a teacher. The job has changed greatly in my 22 years, but I can't imagine being anything else. I hope that I don't have to leave the profession. Awesome @gold sunrise. I agree True blue. A lot has changed in 20 + years. I am hoping to get to retirement and being able to keep what was promised to me when I started. It's not looking good for that.
February 27, 20188 yr Untrue. Maybe to you specifically its untrue but as a whole it is true. The continued support of an Education Commissioner that continued to allow it to happen (as a whole.)

Right now i know of numerous people that have teaching degrees that cant get a job because the market is flooded. Nursing used to be the same way, now nursing is an attractive field because their pay is higher. There are currently 187 jobs available in the state of KY today. In my county I expect 20+ and we are a small county school. In June there may be 400 teaching jobs open. The shortage is coming; not if, but when.

The shortage is coming; not if, but when. Agree. One reason is they are trying to get out teachers that can retire in the next 5-6 years so that the sick days will not count on retirement. Another reason there will be a shortage especially in the areas of math and science. The ones that are majoring in those two can get a much better paying job in the private sector.
February 27, 20188 yr Are teachers are more important than the rest of state employees because they're more vocal? Is that what I said? How do you even come to ask such a question? I have no problem with any profession standing up for the retirement provisions they signed up for. I'm not sure what your ire is with teachers rallying for their pensions. If other groups cannot rally, does that mean that those that can shouldn't?

Oh...and the salary isn't changing in those districts.

The week after I graduated with my degree in chemistry, I was offered a job (that I didn't apply for) that started out making about 50% more than I could make teaching. I didn't even blink an eye in turning it down. I knew what my calling was.
February 27, 20188 yr Maybe to you specifically its untrue but as a whole it is true. The continued support of an Education Commissioner that continued to allow it to happen (as a whole.) Nope. Still untrue.
February 27, 20188 yr Really? I know of tons of districts that cannot fill teaching spots. Send them my way. Oh...and the salary isn't changing in those districts. Same here. More and more hires across many subject areas are temporary provisional and/or Emergency certified. For those not familiar with those terms; that’s people who have degrees in other areas outside of education, but are going back to school usually to earn their MAT in various subject areas. Fewer and fewer people are going into the field.

All I hear about is teachers, but there's a lot of people worried about tbis that cant protest and barely ever get mentioned. I have several friends who are teachers, I don't want them to lose their pension, but I don't want any state employee to lose theirs. And the fact remains that our government has not let the KTRS get anywhere near as bad of shape as the rest of the retirement system. I never said teachers can't or shouldnt rally. I just said they get all the attention but there are others out there that are in the same boat.

To go into another field was not a option I even considered. I loved my job , not all people can say that. I am very proud to say I was a teacher. My two favorite teachers ever were a husband and wife. The husband taught Middle School American History/Ky. History and Government. The wife taught high school Algebra/Geometry,etc. They were so good and interesting in what they did and cared about everyone to a fault, But other than those two and my elementary teachers, the rest for the most part (especially the two years I went to college) just read out of a book or script and just seemed to phone it in and this was a loooong time ago. Truly great teachers are a dime a dozen like you and your husband and the two or three I had. Friends of mine got into teaching for the summer's off, the spring breaks, fall breaks, winter breaks, etc. I don't think they knew or cared about pensions at the time they made their career choice, they just thought the pay was very good for working 8 months or so a year. Would think there might be tens of thousands like this
February 27, 20188 yr move north....Thomas More, Northern Ky University classes are filled with Teaching degrees students Sounds like a life decision. There are plenty of jobs if they would be willing to move. I know a few folks who got their degree after muddling through student teaching, and chose a different career. 10 years ago there was a surplus: not today. 10 years from now it will be worse.
