Yes I am very aware of that game. It was so controversial that JC put down in there programs as a win over Belfry. I can remember the big build up for those games, but JC was always intimidated or didnt play its best game. I remember back in 97' JC went 9-1 in the regular season with its only loss to Belfry. Then in the 2nd round of the playoffs the Eagles where beaten by Bell Co. 14-8. Then the following week that same Bell Co. team that JC played so close at Log Mountain totally destroyed Belfry in the playoffs.

Like you said, it wouldnt take much for this game to become a huge rivalry again considering the superindent as you said played in that game and the current coach is an alum of Belfry.

Not only is he an alumni of that team, he actually played in that game.

It was very entertaining I thought. That is the best part of waiting at a football game...the in between play entertainment. The best I had heard at any game all season long. JC's PA is very good. Is he for hire?

How much ya got? :D

Yeah I know. But he wouldnt have any hard feelings about the outcome of that one or would he.

Seriously? :thumb:

I was thinking that Matney graduated in '75 or '76 - I didn't realize that he played in that game. I wonder if he will dust off the film of that field goal and use it to motivate the players when they play Belfry?

Matney was an outstanding football player and wrestler. He made a lasting impression on me as we stood in line to weigh in before a wrestling match. I don't think that I have ever met anybody with more self confidence than Jim had, but he was always able to backup his talk. I was just glad that one of my UK roommates was in his weight class instead of me.

Seriously? :thumb:

A very wise man - I think it was actually Ted DiBiase, "The Million Dollar Man" - said, "Everybody has his price." :D

Of course, it'd have to be enough to guarantee that PA announcer's permanent retirement from his real job... :thumb:

If the game was played in '75 then that would have been the graduating '76 class right?

Old Hillbilly said that the game was played in '76. I was thinking '75, but I wasn't sure. I do remember that Brian Taylor made/missed the winning field goal. JC started its wrestling program in '74 and we started competing in matches the following year. Matney was Belfry's top wrestler at the time (the Pirates had a weak program but three very good individual wrestlers). I remember Matney rattling off a long list of titles that he had won, beginning in junior high school. Maybe you could ask him opinion about the field goal attempt and report back to us.:D

If it was played in the '76 football season then he would not have played in that game because I am pretty sure he graduated in '76, but if it was played in the '75 season then he would have been in that game.

Old Hillbilly was correct. The game in question was played in 1976 and Belfry won it 14-13, as Johnson Central posted a 6-4 record that year. If Matney graduated in 1976, then he did not play in that game.

I'm sure the game was played in the fall of 1976 Ed Vanhoose was in his first year at Central and Steve Trimble was a Senior that year. In the fall of 1977 my senior year JC did not play in the district.

Thats right after touchdowns not between every play an several times into the play! Ashlands band was stopped just last week from playing during the game an before plays an this went on all night. I guess those with little class have a hard time seeing the lack of it!!! It is one thing to fire up the home team but that is ridiculous as I have stated before act like you have been a winner before it is so much better than to act like you have no idea how to control yourselves.

Class? The best display of class I've seen this year was when Ashland fans stormed the field(prematurely) during the Russell game with a headless mannequin with silver/flake underwear. Wait,, maybe lack of class is a better term.

I thought they had kidnapped Richard Simmons and put a rope around his neck!

My wife gets mad at me when I can remember something like that and I have so much trouble remembering our anniversary
