Playing Pulaski in the tournament at home is a disadvantage for whomever they play. It's a one game setting, and anyone playing at home is an advantage for them. If it is remotely possible every team should have a chance to play a tournament on their home court.

 

Please tell some Mason Co fans that.

It's not logistically...some schools just don't have a big enough facility or parking to handle a Region Tourney. Some regions have a facility available that isn't anyone's home court and I guess that is an ideal situation...the 12th doesn't have that.

It did, but that was only a one-rotation (10 year) deal. A majority of the schools prefer it at Lincoln and Pulaski (truth be told, most don't want the headaches that come with hosting). I was also present at a meeting when it was proposed to go back to a rotation and someone affiliated with Mercer County said something to the effect of "nobody wants to go all the way to McCreary Central for the region," at which point someone from McCreary (who originally seemed okay with rotating) said "nobody wants to go to Mercer," at which point it was decided to keep it as is. I've often wondered what might have changed had the Mercer representative not said that.

:lol2: Burgin and Somerset weren't included when they rotated back in the 90s/2000s. Neither was Mercer (old gym was too small), Harrodsburg, KSD, or Monticello. And of course the Jessamines and Rockcastle weren't in the 12th at the time.

 

If anyone is curious, the rotation went like this, and it was only one cycle:

 

1995 - Danville

1996 - Southwestern

1997 - Casey County

1998 - McCreary Central

1999 - Boyle County

2000 - Wayne County

2001 - Pulaski County

2002 - Russell County

2003 - Garrard County

2004 - South Laurel

2005 - Lincoln County

 

It was roughly a north/south rotation. North Laurel isn't on there, but I think they were slated to host in 2006 when the KHSAA did the big realignment that shifted the Laurels to the 13th Region. At that point it was decided to rotate between Lincoln and Pulaski (the girls had a rotation similar to this).

It would be very hard for many fans from Mercer or Jessamine Co to get to Wayne or McCreary (and vice versa) for a 6:00 start to the first regional games of the first three nights. Actually getting to Garrard or Boyle/Danville can be tough from Wayne or McCreary. Lincoln and Pulaski are both somewhat central to the region and large enough. I remember hearing Wayne's coach Woods talk about this on the radio and I thought it would never happen. I wonder if he is still if favor of it now.

All great points, and judging by the crowds it doesn't appear that going to a two-school rotation has affected the gate at all.

To add to what you've said, the farthest trip in the 12th Region is one hour and 47 minutes (per Google Maps) from East Jessamine to McCreary Central. Assuming most schools can't leave until 4pm (the Jessamines don't get out of school until 3:50), that would be cutting it very close for one of those long trips, not to mention fans who get off work at 5pm. Placing the games in Stanford and Somerset just makes the most sense for all involved and the home court advantage has been minimal since the change was made.

That's a really good question that is probably tough to answer. If I can remember when I get home from work I'll look and see how many times the host school has won the 12th Region tournament. That isn't necessarily what you are asking, I know, but hopefully it can fill in some blanks for other folks.

Absolutely! My favorite place in the 12th Region. Somerset was an almost annual host during the 1940s, 50s, and very early 60s (before consolidations began to take place), with Stanford and Lancaster both hosting a couple of times. Boyle County hosted in their first year as a school in 1964, then alternated with Danville before an almost permanent move to the south in the 1970s in the huge new gyms at Laurel County and Pulaski County. The 1980s saw a somewhat regular rotation of north/south before the 12-year cycle mentioned above was put in the place in the mid-90s.

I love the Somerset gym. It’s one of my favorites. I’d love having Region there because I’d be smart enough to get there early enough before the Fire Marshall shuts the door. :lol2: :lol2:

Im surprised somerset didn't include an arena big enough for Region Tourn when they built the Rural Development Center. Would have been a great place to hold the tournament every year.

Since the current rotation started Lincoln and Pulaski are a combined 8-10 in the regional tournament.

6 times losing in the first round. 3 times winning one game.

Only two teams have made the finals at home. Lincoln in 2015, losing to Boyle Co. and Lincoln beating Boyle to win the region in 2007.

Only 3 times has a home team beat a team with 20 wins, 2015 Lincoln (25-6) beat 23-9 Mercer Co., and 2007 Lincoln Co (24-10) beat Pulaski (20-10) and W Jess (21-10) before beating 18-10 Boyle Co to win the region.

This doesn't answer @UKFan22's question, but listed below are the 12th Region champions who won the region on their own floor. The list goes back to 1939, which was the first year the 12th Region looked remotely close to what it looks like now. Fifteen times in seventy-nine years has the host won - 18.9%. Since the era of county school consolidation and the overall realignment of the state in 1965-66, nine times in fifty-two years has the host won - 17.3%. Since the 12th Region went to the Lincoln/Pulaski rotation, the host has won once in thirteen years - 7.7%. Bottom line, on average in the 12th Region, the host school wins about 20% of the championships, although that number has diminished heavily since the move to a two school rotation. It is possible to argue that playing at Lincoln and Pulaski has been better for 12th Region basketball.
