Nope, virtually all of the decision makers in college football want it left at 4 teams. Even Jim Delaney commissioner of the Big 10 said 4 teams is fine and his conference doesn't have a team in the playoff.

I think you're wrong about that. I don't think the country cares about Duke/ Hampton or UK/NKU unless there is an upset and it messes up their bracket. So no, I don't think people care about those games other than from a superficial aspect of caring about their brackets.

Right there with you. Much more interesting to debate between Ohio State and Alabama than to debate some 3-4 loss team vying for the last slot. And absolutely against any type of automatic qualifier for conference winners.

Im not saying get rid of the first weekend of the NCAA Tourney. I'm just saying that if you put every non P5 conference champ in you would have games as lopsided and meaningless as the 1/16 matchups. People love the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament because of the upsets but usually those upsets are 13 over 4 12 over 5 etc. in college football terms those would be teams outside of the top 12 in the playoff rankings. In an effort of fairness you would have to have the non P5 teams matched up with the top 5 seeds in a hypothetical 16 team playoff. They would be useless games to play.

Yep. People want the final four to be Duke, UK, UNC, and Kansas every year. That's what we get in college football.

Here's a idea all five power conferences have two divisions. Then take the division winners that would be 10 of the 16 and then 6 at large to the best 6 remaining. Wouldn't be bad because you could eliminate the conference championship games in the process. Just a thought.

It kind of works this year but in most years you have 3 or even 4 loss teams as division winners and most would argue they don't deserve the opportunity to play for a national championship.

I would be a proponent of doing away with divisions within conferences and simply having the top 2 teams play for the conference championship exactly like the Big 12 does. Then make winning your conference a prerequisite for going to the playoff. Leave it at 4 teams and keep the lowest ranked conference champ out.

Do we really want to see Duke/ Hampton during March Madness? Or NKU/ UK ? Seems like most of the country says "yes." Whether that translates to football, I don't know. I wouldn't mind an 8 , or even 16- team field.

I totally agree with you. That was my point! I love those David/Goliath matchups. Would a TCU/ Georgia first round game be that terrible? I'd be for expanding to 8, or even 16 teams. Hell, call one of the bowls the BUSH's Hominy Bowl, for all I care.

TCU/ Georgia is fine with me. It's Georgia/ Toledo I don't want to see.
