It does take talent to dunk and shoot. Mediocre teams can run sets and do those kinds of things. Sounds like Brossart had quite a few turnovers which means Newport had quick, fast and length. To the point if both teams played each other in the middle of the year the result would be the same or maybe worse because both teams will get better and the talented players getting better will out way the lesser talent getting better. You can't teach quickness, speed and length. IMO

They are a really good team. Running and gunning after using their athleticism to get all of those steals from Brossart didn't turn into a large margin of victory for them did it? If the teams were to meet later in the year, who knows what the outcome would be, we will never know, but coach Code will be making the most of those slow, short armed kids he is burdened with. :sssh:

Describe talent. Is it the ability to dunk and shoot the ball or is it executing offensive sets and playing as a unit? No doubt in my mind that most of Newport's players were faster and could jump higher than the kids from Brossart, but if executing as a unit, making on the court decisions to take high % shots play into the definition of talented basketball players it is a little harder to determine who was more talented.

It was thrown out there that "if these 2 teams met later in the year the result would be different " and I'm assuming that meant that Newport would have an easier victory? This is what I don't get- why would one think one team would get better and improve and the other would remain where they were on game one of the season?

It was a great game to start the season- well worth the $5 admission - the Mustangs almost pulled off the upset (going by preseason polls and rankings) it will go down as a loss and the Mustangs will move on to take on the Saints of St Pats and look to even their record
