Trimble County played football in the 70's. Walter McChargue was the coach and im not sure but i think they had some winning seasons. From what i understand they were pretty good. They stopped playing football in the early 80's then started back in the early 90's. There first varsity season after starting back was in 1996. Jimmy Means was the head coach. They were 3-6,4-6,4-6 in 96,97,98. Genton became the head coach in 99-04 they were 4-5,5-6,4-7,3-8,0-10,0-10....The change is great for them. When Jimmy Means left the numbers was good and he left a solid Freshman and Sophomore class.....

It is a step in the right direction, but consider the strength of their opponents. Life is good when you can play new programs such as Gallatin, Jackson, Nicholas, and Bracken Counties. But what happens when you start playing the Danville's and Frankfort's of the state?

You're right to some degree. We will see how they hang with Danville and Frankfort. However, they do have wins against teams that are not new, such as Carroll and Eminence. Admittedly, both teams are not as strong (relatively) as they have been at times, but both teams beat Trimble last year. The point is, the program is headed in the right direction and has some talented kids.

Who is Trimble's coach? Where did he come from? What program?

Johnny Poynter - he was head coach at Pike County for 3 years, I think. He was an assistant at Estill Co and Rockcastle (he graduated from there), but was an assistant for Bourbon County back when they won the state championship. He has done some really nice work with Trimble!

Coach Poynter has done a really nice job in turning the program around for Trimble. Trimble finally finds out what its like to win. Congrats to the Raiders on the season and keep up the hard work.

I thought that Trimble was district runner-up one year under Coach Genton

 

They were, but they did not have a winning record 5-6 was his best season.

2 years ago they were 0-25. Who should they paly ST. X, Trinty, Cov. Cath. Highlands? THey are about 40 miles from each. I will see if I can get Poynter to schedule all of them. They have never had successs against anyone at least they are winning against someone. :banana:

It is my understanding that Genton left not because the locals "called for his head" but because he wanted to move up to being a school principal (which he is).

 

There's always a percentage of people that want to fire every coach for some reason. Yes, won the biggest game of the season, but because my kid didn't play the coach isn't doing a good job. Same old story.

 

Coach Poynter and the Raiders, keep up the good work and don't let the nay-sayers distract you. Football is fun in Bedford again because the kids know how to play and they can play, not because you are playing weak teams. Good luck against the Ads.

Congrats Trimble County and the coaching staff there. Even if the scheduling is weak.... success is success. This is something to build off of and get kids out. Look for bigger things to happen at Trimble Co.

IF you haven't been in the 'arena' you don't have a clue of what it is like to step into a situation like Poynter took on!!. Regardless of who they play he has done an outstanding job just getting a team together that wants to compete. To his credit he took the lessons he learned at Pike County and used those to do a fantastic job at Trimble. Yes Trimble is in over their heads tonight. But, if the trimble kids "fight" the score doesn't matter. It is the willingness to show up at the battle and give all you have that defines improvement. :thumb:
