We have had 3-4 7 man crews this year. I think the games are much better. I think more flags are picked up also because more eyes are watching.

I talked to friend of mine who is an official and he says this year in the playoffs, the 3rd & 4th rounds and championship games will have 7 officials. The 1st & 2nd rounds will use 5. A few schools in Jefferson Co have agreed to use 7officials in the regular season games in order for the officials to get used to the different mechanics used for 7 officials compared to 5 men.

More money for officials and less for teams splitting the gate.

 

It's not like they already don't get most of the revenue.

 

4 officials for. 9th grade game at 45.00 each. 180.00 gone and most teams are lucky to get that much at gate, especially if students get in free.

Is it 120.00 plus mileage for playoffs for each official.

The officials must justify their presence by making some calls or else why should they be included in the first place.

I really don't believe the first thought going through officials heads is "I gotta make call to justify me being here". We constantly hear fans and coaches complaining about missed and bad calls, yet when the KHSAA attempts to do something about it, people complain about the solution. I haven't seen the issue you mention in baseball, as the 2nd and 3rd base umps don't get that many calls to begin with, and can only get involved in calls that are theirs anyway. And really it's the same thing with officials. I'm not familiar with 7 man mechanics in football, but each will have their own specific areas of responsibility. And really, the number of calls is dictated by the teams for the most part, not the number of officials. For sure, bad calls happen. Sometimes they are bad because the official isn't in very good position, because of the amount of area he has to cover. A seven man crew addresses that, and anything that can be done to improve officiating, especially in big games, is ok with me. I don't beat on officials unless they screw up or misapply a rule, and I don't think officials are nearly as bad nor do they have an agenda, as many people would like to think.
