Belfry 42 Prestonsburg 10

Featured Replies

No hairs to split here. ;)

Honestly, I saw nothing wrong with what either team did at the end of the game. I was a little taken aback that the other poster DID have a problem with Prestonsburg continuing play and not "quitting".

It's this simple...P-burg was behind very late in the game. Belfry didn't play its safeties deep. The long pass was there. Still behind...so...get in some work on the offside kick. That's all there was to it.

Our Fresh. and Soph. scored against your Sr's and you think it was the same as your Sr's scoring against Soph's and Fresh?

I hope we play in the playoffs and Coach Haywood onsides kicks when we are up 42-3 in the game.......games over might as well get in a little work:rolleyes:

Does anyone know anything about Haywood possibly retiring within the next 2-3 years? Whats your thoughts and rumors on this?

Coach Haywood is going no where anytime soon and no one wants him to.

I am sure that there is nobody in Belfry who want to lose such a great coach to retirement. However, there are many people in eastern Kentucky who would probably kick in a few bucks on a gold pocketwatch to see Coach Haywood call it quits at Belfry.

I had actually heard that there were a few people wanting Haywood out. I was on top of the pressbox friday and heard alot of grumbling amongst fans about Haywood's play calling...don't really understand how anyone could say anything to Haywood about anything in regards to his football team.

Welcome to Pond Creek, gish28. Where wonders never cease.

A lot is parents who don't understand or people like I was a few years ago.

I thought I knew a lot about football and coaching in general but after dealing with kids on a level where you have more than 10-15, even though its basketball \, I can say I knew nothing of what Coach Haywood went through and does.

I was sitting in a room where he was speaking and all of the sudden it hit me what a great leader he is and how he always says a lot with just the right words and nevers says too much.

He also spoke at our sports banquet last year and his story had a meaning to middle schoolers and even the parents and coaches.

He is great Example and Coach.

Great post, JD.

Those that question the play-calling, and there are fewer now than there have been in years past, are just having a difference of opinion. For example, I thought that against Prestonsburg we maybe pounded the ball up the middle a little much, but you can't argue with the results.

Some of the more belligerent fans may say something stupid that they don't really mean, but they paid there money to get in the game so let'em talk.:D

Gish you know good and well why all those old matchups you played against Belfry seemed so loud... in closer games more coaches come out. Hence more playcall questioning, hence larger noise!

At a typical Belfry game of about 3000 people you can have the greatest coaching clinic in America because usually 1500 of those fans are coaches that night. But, at the end of the night 99% of those leave their criticisms at the door. It's just that 1% that can cause trouble such as what's going on at Boyle County.

I'll admit that I am just as bad as the next guy when I get caught up in the game... but I have noticed just as JD has posted that the more my coaching experience increase, the less my criticism gets. Funny how that works! HAHA

Coach Haywood is a pinnacle..plain and simple. The man stands for integrity, moral value, and touches his player's lifes on a level far beyond the playing field. Seeing sad situations in the area recently (Yogi Kinder @ Matewan, Tug Valley's team walking out at halftime last year, the swinging doors of Shelby Valley) only solidifies to me what this man has stood for. WHEN Haywood decides to retire they can say one thing, the same thing I could only wish for if I ever get to the level of being a head coach, that "He did it is way, but his way was the right way."

Goinna get off topic briefly.

Keith Madison recently was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame and it reminded me of a lesson I learned in one of my college coaching courses. Our professor listed no names, just numbers on board dealing with wins and losses and we discussed for one hour who was more successful with option A being average numbers and option B being some outstanding stats. She later listed another set of stats which included gradation rate, number of NCAA violations, and arrests and revealed that Option A was Keith Madison and Option B was Bob Huggins. That point stuck with me because 1) It illustrated what "success" truly means and 2) Huggins will never be a Hall of Came Coach, but Madison is.

Coach Haywood is an exception... he is a Hall of Famer for the success he breeds both on and off the field for his players!

Belfry has a great coaching staff and they improve every week. When some were counting them out early I said that they will be there at the end and they are starting to show their power. I think they are maybe now the favorite from the east. I watched Russell and I think Belfry is a more complete team. Now......I still think Mercer is the team to beat in 2A.

I myself was called out By Coach Haywood himself.....in a joking manner of course:lol:

I probably have cam across to you and others as the most arrogant, cocky person in the Belfry area(besides a buddy of mine:lol: ) but I'll admit when I was wrong and just plain stupid, and I have been in the past when it comes to Coach Haywood

I was wrong about this one, I thought P-burg would play a little closer. Congrats to Belfry. :thumb:
