Long story short the guy I talked with knows the FTH freshman coach and talked with him last week. Highlands will petition the KSHAA to move to 3A. They will have to travel quit a bit but can't handle the 5A schedule anymore.

It wouldn't be next year, but rather in 2019. The numbers look like Highlands would be 4A, not 3A. You can't petition to play down, although in the past they've dropped teams right on the cut-line if others were looking to move up. I don't think Highlands is on that line. I suspect they'll be 4A with Holmes and Scott, and perhaps Bourbon and Harrison.

Also, the KHSAA hasn't met regarding alignments yet so any comments by the Highlands fan and myself is pure speculation, but looking at the numbers I suspect that's how it will play out. Highlands should have been 4A the last time but asked to play up. I suspect they'll continue the series with Covington Catholic (who is solidly 5A) even if they aren't in the same district.

Highlands will play up like always, unless KHSAA tells them otherwise. They can't play down and would not even consider it. They belong in 4A, but I can't see that happening either. I would be shocked to see them in 4A again. (JMO)

There's no way they're moving in the middle of an alignment. There's the correct in the middle of four years (like what happened to South Warren and Moore), but not in the middle of a two year scheduling cycle. It would be complete and utter chaos on the schedule. And as noted, Highlands is nowhere near being a 3A school, so there's not a chance they'd be moved down that far.

FWIW, we already have three of the four years that should be used in the next alignment. When they release this current year, we'll have the complete picture. If they stick with the average of four years like they did in the last alignment, then Highlands will be solidly 4A in terms of pure alignment (no petitions up or down). They'd be the 13th largest school in the class.

As a service to whoever told you about the 3A move, you might want to get in touch with them and let them know what you have found out here - that Highlands cannot move to 3A. I'm sure you would not want them to continue to pass on incorrect information that they might even consider embarrassing.

Just to be clear, the first part of your statement is correct because it came from Billie Bob's cousin who knows the freshman coach and the second part is your opinion?

If they can't handle the 5A schedule anymore then they should certainly considering removing all those 6A teams as well, oh how the mighty have fallen!:idunno:
