Fayette County doesn't have middle school soccer. The issue with many of the schools is that when they were built, there was no extra space for practice fields so football/ boys soccer & girls soccer all compete for field time with two of these teams often splitting the field up 50 yards each right after school with the odd man out team practicing late. The people I've talked to in the know about the situation say that they could practice off campus, but transportation would be an issue & many times there isn't anything available close enough to make it feasible.

 

Why not have soccer practice on the baseball fields in the OF? That's what Bardstown does and it seems to work. Don't these schools have small practice fields for football?

from what I know it's too much on the outfields to take multiple teams practicing daily on them. Maybe if they turfed the outfields it would be viable.

I know last season wasn't much different, however PLD was much more competitive last season than they have been this season. Were they one of the schools that Fredrick Douglas drew kids from?

 

Dunbar's 2 best running backs last year are the top 2 at Douglas. That'll do it. Rains leaving hurt, too. He steadied the program. But soccer rules the school, unfortunately.

I wouldn't say "unfortunately." There's nothing wrong with having a strong soccer (or sports) program at your school. Dunbar has proven in the past you can win soccer crowns and also be good at football. It just doesn't seem like that is the case right now.

Oh, I'm not mad at the kids for picking a competitive school if they truly had a choice. But if they hand picked for athletic motives, that's a completely different story. Harkless and Gay are 2 good high school running backs, no doubt about that. I'm sure Dunbar would be different with them and whoever else left, to answer the question posed by this post.

This might be a precursor of things to come nationwide. Moms are scared to have their son's play football because of the recent concussion media coverage.

 

That probably will happen, just as moms aren't signing their kids up for boxing either. With more and more CTE research being done on living/current players at all levels (not just the NFL), we'll see how that affects middle and upper class families allowing their kids to play.

That's not an entirely fair comparison, though. Motorcycles, ATVs and cars can certainly be dangerous but you don't wreck the car every time you leave the house. There is helmet contact every time you play the game, be it practice or Friday night. Until a safe way is devised to eliminate that (and there are steps being taken to do so) you will see likely see fewer participants.

It's unfortunate in this case when there's not a practice field for either sport and soccer gets the prime support. The soccer program is prime, I get it. They need a coach to steady the program and bring some excitement and championship pedigree like they had with Coach Rains.

Your right it is not a fair comparison. The fatality rate in football is much less.
