You are correct and I should have mentioned, for this thread of discussion only.

:thumb: Jeter still wins it imo.

This is a very good and logical post. I agree 100% Strike3 :thumb: :thumb: . Imo Jeter wins w/o question.
Thanks OR and Spindoc, you are out numbered....for now....:D

Call me old school, old fashioned or just plain "old" (hush Sticky) ....but I never have liked a Pitcher getting MVP votes, a Reliever getting Cy Young or non-position player, getting MVP consideration.

My proposal....Eliminate the DH and let pitchers hit. Bring strategy back into the game, bunting, Pinch-Hitters would be involved, base-stealing, game management and a tremendous amount of revenue would be saved per team, which might even help ticket prices and ERA's.....just my ramblings.

Boy, have I opened the Jeter-Homer can haven't I?

Look boys! All I said is that a DH should IMO be considered. I'll go one step further, I think IMHO that if you lose Jeter in a normal year (not one like this season with all of the injuries) and you could replace him defensively much easier than Ortiz could be replaced in their lineup. There will always be the age-old discussion of "does the award mean who's the most valuable to his team?" or something else. I'm not knocking on Jeter, only saying I think personally it's nuts to disclude a DH.

I agree with those, but I still stand by the fact that since there is a DH no matter how much we don't like it, they are as much, or more part of the AL game as any other player!

True, but you could not replace the entire package that is Derek Jeter...which is my point...

In the end, I'm a baseball fan. What's right is right...

I agree, under the current system, if they play they can win....but my preference is every day, over DH.

...For the record, "I'm a FAN of Baseball" and not a "Homer" to any player....:thumb:

Let the record show, so noted.

Don't be so paranoid S3, I wasn't being selective. I agree that Jeter is deserving, since we are recording, and think he wins, but will argue again that the DH is just as much a factor often. I do think that enough voters think like you do and a DH would have to go so far beyond a position player statistically to win the MVP. I believe that is what won ARod the award last year, the fact that Ortiz was not a position player.

Let me ask you this then, can a DH win an ALCS MVP?,,,,they didn't play the field!!!

Not paranoid and no problem. I enjoy your posts and you'll eventually come around to agreeing with me....:D

Now, since the current system is in place....Yes. I really haven't thought about it much but since it's a short series, I would say....Yes. My argument would be, for the entire body of work, over the course of the season and yes, in a short series....offensive production can certainly help in winning an ALCS. If a Pitcher wins 2 games, he is often given consideration but in a 7 game series, the other 2 games are just as important.

Good question.

Agreed. In a short series, two or three hits are magnified much greater than in a 162 game season.

Boys,,,I think that's a double standard. Are the playoffs not more scrutinized and more "important"? So what your telling me is that a position player who does it over the course of the season is more "worthy" than a guy like Frank Thomas , who in a short series, for instance , may carry the A's on his back but left his Rawlings in the clubhouse. See my argument?

Why then is a pitcher eligible or a DH eligible in the "most important" games/series and not the others?

Because like you said, that's currently the way it is.

In a best of 5 or best of 7, a "offensive player" can hit 7 of 12, 11 of 18 and carry his team, "in that series"....Over the course of 162, he will still hit near .300± and not be able to sustain that hot streak.

Just like slumps, hitting streaks come and go.....and YES, a position player who does it over the course of 162, is more worthy, than a guy who bats for 10 minutes total per game and sits down, the other 3hrs and 15 minutes....in my book, which I'm willing to lend for your reading pleasure.....:D

So if you get hot for two weeks in the regular season you should be named MVP? There are a lot of worthy candidates now.

Pick any two week period of the season and you'll find someone who was red hot. Should they deserve the MVP? When you take a small sample, you have to open up your options. If a pitcher only throws one game in a series, I have a hard time naming him MVP. What the Big Unit did for Arizona is MVP worthy, IMO.

C'mon Sticky, you're better at arguing than that!!!

The bottom line is that it's fine with you guys in the post season that a DH wins an MVP award, but not the regular season, regardless of his #'s. Surely you can't argue that Ortiz's #'s are staggering for the past couple of seasons, is that not consistency, and when they won the WS, was his offense a major, if not the major factor in the success? Especially in the post-season!
