I know...it's how they stole the signs. I'm just not all that worked up about it and I really don't think it's all that big of a deal. If you're stealing signs, you're stealing signs.....regardless of how it's done.

He may have known every pitch that was coming. Stealing signs is part of the game and has always been part of the game. The only problem here is how they were stealing the signs. As long as you don't use an electronic device it's all good. When I played in college, someone was assigned to try to pick up signs to tip the batters. Every MLB team is actively trying to steal signs. simply knowing the pitch doesn't guarantee success, although it does help. and I know a lot of guys who'd rather not know what's coming.

Heck, as far back as when I was a kid playing Knothole we were always trying to pick up the other teams signs, just part of the game then. However to use electronic devices, that's just not proper.

From what I heard on the Baseball Tonight Podcast the issue wasn't in how they stole the signs but in how they used the Apple Watch to relay the information. They were using their video room to review the signs and then transmitting that information to the assistant trainer's watch and from there he gave it to the players. Evidently their video room is not right behind the clubhouse so they did it to get the information to the players quicker.

 

The Red Sox also claim to have submitted evidence to the league officer that the Yankees had one of their YES cameras focused on bench coach Gary DiSarcina in order to steal the Red Sox signs. I know that Rob Manfred wanted both teams to keep this out of the news but the 2 rivals just couldn't do it. Even if the Red Sox do have that evidence I wish they'd have kept it quiet and just owned what they did.

There will certainly be some fines coming. I'm not sure about suspensions. Who would they suspend? The video crew, the trainer, Dombrowski, Farrell? May vote is for Farrell. I could live without him for a week or so.

I never said stealing signs was an issue. But when you break the rules to do it then it is problem.

It always sounded to me that Gwynn didn't want false intelligence or just didn't want it in his head. One of the highest batting averages ever, he didn't need the help. Never heard Ripken speak on it but I think they just say it as a mentality.

 

The only way to get MLB hitters out is to change speeds. If you're telling me you don't want to know if it's coming in at 95, 85, or 78, you're crazy.
