Mercer Co. merger questions?

Featured Replies

Should be interesting to see how the new "Mercer Cty" team fairs against the big schools next year.

Playing the teams like Christian Cty, Hopkinsville, BG, CovCath and Highlands is a whole lot different than playing the Lloyds, Newports, West Carters and Estill Ctys.

That is a moot point if they are as good as people say then it should not matter when they play those teams, they should be competive and compete each year I think a lot of people forget that the Harrodsburg Mercer area has been talent rich for many years with players like Dennis Johnson, Craig Yeast, Julius Yeast I could name more but I am not going to. Also Highlands and Cov Catholic will not be in 5a. Mercer's district next year is a little harder but not that much(Lincoln Co, Pulaski Co, South Laurel, Pulaski Southwestern) Look up the allignment for 5a there are some very good teams there but mercer will be right there with them.

Highlands and CCath WILL be in 5A next year...They were granted permission to "play up".

I was going by the original pdf I wasn't aware that they were playing up, but that still does not change the fact they will be competitive with those teams however I agree they need to prove that they can before being mentioned in the same breath with teams like that

There is no reason to think that MC could not play this year with anyone in the state (with maybe the exception of the B3). The have the speed, size, and numbers to play with anyone.

Really? Never would've guessed that. :jump:

Secondly, Mercer wont be playing Christian County, Hopkinsville, BG unless they were to make it to the State Championship..or unless they were to play a non-district regular season game...nor will they have to play CovCath or Highlands until the Semi-State.

Thirdly, and I dont know about West Carter or Estill Co, Mercer hasnt had to play them in a couple/few years, but if you dont thing Newport and Lloyd dont have some athletes and football players on their squads year in, year out, then you're completely mistaken.

Of course next year will be next year, and what happenened a few weeks ago is in the past, but Mercer beat South Laurel 57-6 in week 2..South Laurel, is a current 4A school and will be in Mercer's district next year. South Laurel at that, is a very sound, good, more than respectable football team.

Will the competition as a whole be more next year when the realignment happes, well heck yes, but instead of some of you thinking that Mercer will be thrown for a shock, Im thinking that a lot of you will be thrown for a shock in how well Mercer will compete and win in the new 5A. Now interpret myself saying WIN into winning multiple state championships, that would be great, but what Mercer will do is win and be very, very competitive in the new 5A..that's 330 days away though, too far down the road to even be considered, especially with this years football season really just beginning (meaning, moving into district play).

Well said

With the merger, what is Mercer's student population this year?

Mercer Co-year in and our was pretty good and so was Harrodsburg-

put them together and you got this years team!!! In 5a it will not be as big of difference as this year. The new weight room-turf area also heps participation and the kids knew they would be good after the merger- so to make a long story short-participation is way up

I think if Mercer is going to make a run at a state title, they better do it this year.

Everything has fallen into place for them this year from the merger, to the schedule, to a weak 2A class (other than a couple teams).

They will be just another average team once in 5A, I think this all puts a lot of pressure on them to go very far into the postseason this year.

Have you seen them play?

Have you seen them play?

No I haven't, but their best two wins are against a non-characterisically bad Boyle team and a very young LCA team.

I am not questioning that Mercer is very good, I have had some coaches I know tell me they are, I am just saying that they are going to have a major jump in strength of schedule and the whole wow factor is going to be gone.

I agree that there schedule is very weak and that may end up being their downfall but I don't think their district for next year is that tough although once out of district is when the woods get a lot thicker. They will have to be respected even in 5a and yes you are right the wow factor will be gone but they are solidly coached and will be a force in 5a.

Since you obviously know all the facts, or should I say SUPPOSE your own facts I guess nobody else needs to say anything. The schools weren't merged to put a 3A/5A school in 2A.

Mercer had the funding to build a new school, some of it was a one time kind of thing. Build now or don't build. The new school and facilities were to be done in 3 phases over an 8-10 year period. By merging now instead of waiting they will have increased funding and be able to complete the process in 2 phases, 4-6 years. Waiting would have been dumb.

So be as sarcastic as you like, and throw as many jabs at them as you want. This was an opportunity for the school systems to do the best thing for the future of the children there.

I just wish everyone would get over it and quit crying. If you were in the same situation - you would make the same decision.

Hey, I'm not mad, I could care less.

But I call it like it is, and the administration at Mercer Co. did what they did because it gave them a great opportunity at a State Chamionship, period. You said that one of the schools was in a bad financial situation, correct? Well, there is no better way to bring money into a school than by having a championship caliber football team. I understand & I'm OK with that. As long as it is within KHSAA rules, no one really has a gripe. But to say it's fair to the schools in 2A with actual 2A enrollement isn't exactly right.

With that being said, I am of the opinion that the KHSAA should not have allowed them to merge. But they did allow it, and I understand that you can't just go changing rules as soon as somebody figures out how to bend them.

However, I'd be willing to bet we never see a situation like this in KY again.

With the merger, what is Mercer's student population this year?

Not quite a grand, I think.
