Mercer Co. merger questions?

Featured Replies

Can someone explain exactly what is going on with the merger in Mercer Co. I am not very well informed on what schools have merged and where the school is. Can somebody clear up the confusion?

There are one million answers on this in various threads, but to make a long story short here it is the way I understand it.

Mercer Co. and Harrodsburg will have a new school built in the near future. But the schools' administration decided to go ahead and combine schools, have classes on both the Mercer Co. & Harrodsburg campus, thus enabling them to field a 3A/5A school that will compete this year alone in 2A football.

Needless to say, academics was at the top of the administration's priority list.

I think whats going on. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. Students have classes at both buildings while they are underconstruction of the new school. Some students goto both buildings, while some stay at one. They decided to merge all athletic programs, I guess to give kids the oppurtunity to meet students from both (Harrodsburg and Mercer). Bus drivers have been real corporative in taking kids back in forth. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Contrary to popular belief the reason for this merger had nothing to do with athletics it is just a bonus.

1. Harrodsburg's numbers in the school have dwindled for the last decade with students choosing to either attend Mercer or Burgin Independant as a result less funding is given to a school

2. With less funding given Harrodsburg was unable to offer near the education that was available at mercer ie:( more classes offered, better more up to date equipment

3. With Harrodsburg's Superintendant retiring Harrodsburg was going to have difficulty paying another plus the issue that mercer was going to be building another school a decision had to be made on whether or not to go ahead and merge so this would not just be dumped in mercer's lap after the new school was built. By going ahead plans could be incorporated for the new school to include the students from harrodsburg into the new school

4. There currently is a 4 class system in kentucky so saying mercer is 5A sounds worse than it actually is. In reality under the current system mercer would be a small 3a school. The new system will have 6 classes which will mean that there will less teams in each class. The advantage that they have is not that great and is used more as an excuse rather than just admitting they are a good football team and leaving it at that, have some class and think before posting something echoed from someone, as such a stance loses value when no factual information backs this. What I have posted above is fact and it aimed at educating and ending the echoes of unfairness all over this board about mercer

This is correct students have classes in both buildings so the campus is not independant in that mercer co goes to mercer and that harrodsburg goes to harrodsburg the students are intermingled at each school depending on what classes a student wants to take and where they are offered

Since you obviously know all the facts, or should I say SUPPOSE your own facts I guess nobody else needs to say anything. The schools weren't merged to put a 3A/5A school in 2A.

Mercer had the funding to build a new school, some of it was a one time kind of thing. Build now or don't build. The new school and facilities were to be done in 3 phases over an 8-10 year period. By merging now instead of waiting they will have increased funding and be able to complete the process in 2 phases, 4-6 years. Waiting would have been dumb.

So be as sarcastic as you like, and throw as many jabs at them as you want. This was an opportunity for the school systems to do the best thing for the future of the children there.

I just wish everyone would get over it and quit crying. If you were in the same situation - you would make the same decision.

If they are a small AAA school as you say, then explain to me why they are jumping all the way to 5A next year instead of just to 4A.

So is there a Harrodsburg elementary and middle school that was a feeder into the old high school? Will these be merged as well with the Mercer Co. schools?

I assume that was/is the case since there was a Superintendant. I couldn't imagine having one for just one school.

If they are a small AAA school as you say, then explain to me why they are jumping all the way to 5A next year instead of just to 4A.

By total poulation - This years rule, I believe they would have gone to 4A.

For some reason Mercer has nearly a 60% boy population. With the new division based on boy population they go to 5A.

Like I said the classes are smaller for each class so the classfication for each class is a smaller band range so in this case mercer will be a small 5a school. I don't agree with the new classifaction because of the fact that there will be so few schools in each class. Also in all reality most 3a schools go to 5a 4a go to 6a there are exceptions. Yes mercer is a 3a school this year by classification but the classes are not realigned each year so mercer stayed in 2a

All schools will be merged. There will be 2 elementary, 1 middle school, 1 junior high school, and 1 senior high school.

I disagree. check the numbers mercer would not have been close to 4a

Yes there is just one Superintendant Bruce Johnson and he is over the entire system from elementary to high school.
