The Burger Week Geek Speaks:

So Far I've tried 3 with plans of trying 3 more.

From my perspective the original spirit of this yearly Burger Week Burgermania is a chance to try out these restaurant's regular menu big burgers, and if they're impressive then they're worthy of having again sometime at their regular price, yet be careful not to be fooled by some of these establishments who are going with reduced sized versions of their regular burgers. With so many places playing the game within the spirit of its original intent, those playing with this catch get a big thumb's down in my book, and that will also play heavy on my impression of them for future visits.

On my first visit I learned the hard way. There's a new Burgers and Crafts restaurant in the Holiday Inn in Covington. Though their burger was tasty (little bit tough), and came with a couple of slices of crisp bacon, and a fried egg with hot fire bbq sauce with a tiny container of cole slaw, it was only a 1/4 pounder when their normal 1/2 pounder from the menu is $9 bucks. OK a sampling, but not a big deal considering it's Burger Week. Big thumbs down, and left a bad taste (so to speak) in my mouth with being duped.

2nd visit was MOTR Rock n' Roll bar in OTR serving until 1 a.m. - nice sized tasty seasoned burger, perhaps bigger than a 1/3 or a hair smaller than a 1/2, not completely sure, with all the fixins and an onion ring with fresh hand cut fries for an additional $2. In truth this regular menu item typically comes with fries for $8.50, so ultimately your getting a $1.50 off of the regular price. Still a decent tasting burger and nice big fries in an unpretentious atmosphere.

I called ahead to House of Orange in Covington and the girl on the phone talked the burger up like it was big, but when I arrived the bartender described it as a 1/4 pounder, so I didn't want to fall into that trap again, so I split. Domestic beers were only $1.75 so that wasn't bad, but I wanted a nice big burger.

Then I get a text later on from a friend who said that she had been to the House of Orange this very same evening and said that it was very good, so I'm confused until I get to speak with her and find out what was so good about it if it wasn't a normal sized burger from their regular menu.:idunno:

Then I stepped into the new Smoke Justis in Covington located in an old Telephone Company building, and named after a baseball player from the Covington Blue Sox from 1913.

They told me that their special burger was the Federal Burger on their menu and is a 1/2 lb burger, but at 8:15 in the evening they were all out of burgers. Go figure. Maybe try them again before the week is through. Better get there for lunch to ensure that they haven't run out yet.

Then I strolled into Keystone in Covington for a description of their burger, and they too were serving a 1/4 pounder with the addition of brisket on top of Yorkshire Pudding.

Hmmmm...maybe...but I opted to head on over to the Mainstrasse where there are two more restaurants involved on Main Street.

Though I knew that I could trust Zola's because every normal Wednesday they have the $6 big angus beef burger with huge steak fries that I've had many times before, and know that I will again, so I opted for Mac's Pizza where they were offering a 1/2 pound Western Burger with bacon, bbq sauce, and a couple onion rings on top with all the fixins. I was happy with it, and it tasted fine, and again in an unpretentious bar atmosphere with a friendly staff and respectable patrons.

Last year I had Bards in Latonia, and while just a no frills place, the burger is indeed big and good. Might have to check them out again before the week is through.

Some friends are talking Flipdaddy's in Newport, so I can bet that I'll be there also before the week is through. Had theirs before and liked it, so I'm confident.

Been wanting to check out Lachey's Bar in OTR but I've already had two reports that they're "just ok".... C'mon Nick...Do your city proud and serve a really good burger. Though I've been warned I was really looking forward to checking it out, so who knows, I might have to see for myself.

BRU Burger downtown at 6th & Walnut has peaked my curiosity because every time I've walked past it, it is packed and the smell of their burgers keep calling my name.

So how about you...

Any places you're eager to try?

If you don't already, you should write food reviews for magazines\newspapers. Very well done.

Think we are going to stop in at Flip Daddy's in Newport. Wife loves one of their burgers they have for Burger Week. I love their Happy Hour beers haha!

Zips and Quatman Cafe in Cincinnati are home to the best burgers I've ever had in the area.

Enjoy wherever you end up. A well made medium rare burger rocks!!! :thumb:

FlipDaddy's in Union was so crowded last night at 6:45 that I just left. It was CRAZY busy.

This was actually organized by a Cov Cath grad. He's also helping organize a similar burger week here in Louisville that starts on Monday. I'm pretty excited about it, honestly.

They are decent, but a little over priced for what you get IMO.

I think their Swiss Bliss is outstanding, and while I wouldn't put them in the Quatman's / Zip's league, I have them on the next tier. I think it is $10 -- which these days is about par for the course. Sadly.

I'm a big fan of the The Cincinnati Sunrise and it's like $14 and very bad for you. :lol2:

We need another Flip Daddys BGP outing soon.

Though not on the list of participating restaurants, Boswell's Alley on Blue Rock in Northside has an outstanding 1/2 pound burger w/garden and chips starting at $6.50, or a 1/3 pound starting at $4.95, and $.50 for add-ons such as cheese, mushrooms etc.

When they say 1/2 pound they mean it , and boy it sure is tasty. When a lot of places have inched their prices up to around $10, here a real good sized delicious mushroom and swiss burger is just $7.50.

If chips aren't satisfactory, they do have many sides to choose from for an up-charge.

Unpretentious friendly atmosphere with a huge garden patio as well.

Live music on weekends, typically Big Band Swing/Jazzy type stuff. Tends to attract a mature easy going, not ready to give up on fun, mature crowd.

No Ollie's Trolley? I'm on a bit of a nostalgia jag. I know it's changed hands, relocated, etc. Anybody been to? Hopefully coming to a reunion of sorts in October. Back in the day, people used to line up half a block to get an Ollie Burger from the one on 6th St. Ludicrously addictive. :hungry:

So I made my way back to Smoke Justis in Covington today with hopes that this time they hadn't already ran out of burgers, and hurray... mission was accomplished!

Their offering was the Federal Burger (a 1/2 lb bacon cheeseburger w/garden and saratoga chips) named after the league that the Covington Blue Sox played in in 1913 from early May to late June before selling the team to the Kansas City Packers due to low attendance related to the flood of 1913.

No complaints here, the burger was tasty and legit.

About the building:

It's an old Telephone company building that from the outside looks architecturally classic, while IMO the inside is a huge unimpressive snoozer.

The old fashioned tiled tin ceiling has been painted blue (which feels disgraceful actually) to suit the Blue Sox theme, but aside from that nothing grabs you as it's cold and unexciting. Feels a bit more on the industrial side, which for their sake likely makes for easier clean-up.

There is a section of wallpaper that has been made to show old newspaper headlines of the baseball team, but other than that truly I was hoping for more of a "Wow" reaction upon entering the place.

If anyone recalls the fairly interesting underground restaurant bar in the basement of this building, Smoke Justis is also utilizing it as their game room and pool hall with a decent assortment of old arcade games.

There are no employees downstairs, so cleverly there is also a row of about 6 do-it-yourself beer dispensers that you pay for with a credit card. The floors are all gray painted concrete, so all in all I didn't find any classic warmth on the inside of a building that is just beaming with it on the outside.

They are decent, but a little over priced for what you get IMO.

I would agree with you on that. Which is also why we are going when they are only $5. Their French Connection is very tasty.

Terry's Turf Club is my #1 and I think Zips is terribly..
