Graves and Warren Central ?

Featured Replies

Huh?
His point was that Warren Central would present more of a challenge and better prepare Mayfield for the postseason. Unlike fans of some teams, those that support the Cardinals aren't content with pounding on weak opponents and piling up easy wins.
Has Warren Central ever played Mayfield?
They have played at least once, when Damon Hood was either a junior or senior at Warren Central. The Dragons beat Mayfield in the bowl game at Bowling Green (or WKU, I don't remember) ... I think the score was either 17-7 or 17-14.
ask mayfield fans if Andrew Sanderson can throw the BALL! 10 of 11 with 110 yards and 2 TD's in the first Half.

If you were at the game then you should know that BOTH touchdown passes were on blown coverages by Mayfield........its not that difficult to throw to a guy WIDE OPEN..........

You got it, :thumb:

Interesting, do you remember what year that was?

Yeah....i like how Graves prepares for their district....with Heath and Calloway....REAL tough schedule....if they wonder why they rarely make noise in their district, maybe they should look at their schedule.......this is a reflection of their program status, IMO.......

I think it was 1989, when Hood was a junior.

1990. Warren Central defeated Mayfield 17-7 in the Heritage Bowl at WKU. That Warren Central team was defeated only three times: Bowling Green (13-0), Montgomery Bell Academy (21-14 OT), and in the state championship against Trinity (27-14). The closeness of the game between Mayfield and probably the second best Central team ever should indicate that in many years the two programs would have a good game.

In a Graves County note, Graves has only defeated Warren Central once, two years ago. Warren Central leads the series 6-1. Four of those meetings have come in the playoffs (Central has won all four).

When you get me on my history kick, it's hard to stop.

In Graves defense of schedule, a few years back they had a prett brutal nondistrict schedule that included a couple of MO teams that took them to the woodshed a few times. I think they decided that to build some confidence that they needed to back off on their schedule for a few years and get a few wins to try and give the program some confidence. Surely they will beef it back up in the future. Their program is fragile compared to Mayfield's and I can understand their strategy.

When Anthony Hatchell and Jack Haskins were coaching at Graves, their non-district schedule was the best in western Kentucky ... Mayfield, Paducah Tilghman, Hopkinsville and the two Missouri teams, Jackson and Cape Central. To top it off, one year they played a strong Dyersburg team in the bowl game at Murray State.

I understand weakening the schedule a bit, but I think the Eagles went too far the other way.

How can their program be fragile? They are a 4A school, if they expect to win it all, they are going to have to play teams that are on a level with the big Louisville schools or they might as well give up. A school the size of Graves shouldn't have any problems turning out the talent the big championship teams do, it is just that the tradition isn't there. I think that coach Rogers is changing that for sure but it just seems silly to schedule the weaker teams unless travel is a concern, but I would think that expenses aren't a problem for a program the size of Graves.

It was not 1989...that was my senior year for the Cardinals and we did not play Warren Central...it was the 1990 season opener and it was a bowl game in Bowling Green because I was in Nashville that weekend and travelled up to the game and it was 17-14 in favor of the Dragons in a game not decided until the final moment. Would like to see the teams play also if the schedules would allow them too.
