Apart of the Athens, GA - Elephant Six Collective Recording Company with other such acts as Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, and Of Montreal, 23 year vets Elf Power is appearing for free tonight, Monday, July 17 at MOTR on Main St. in OTR downtown Cincy.

 

You could probably easily discuss them in the same conversation with The Flaming Lips.

Elf Power rolled into town last night at MOTR in OTR in support of their 16th full length release in 23 years "Twitching in Time" and delivered a pleasing assortment of their seasoned career-spanning brand of non-pretentious no-angst 3 minute melodic indie pop tunes to a Monday night enthusiastic crowd of 35 or so, 30-50 somethings.

 

Some might recognize their sound as a bit of wimp rock, but to balance out shy nice guy vocalist/guitarist Andrew Rieger's steady yet passive singing that felt like a cross between Colon Meloy of the Decemberists, and Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, were decent harmonies provided by their lead guitarist and bassist, along with solid tight time keeping from their awesome snappy drummer. The polished bright pop chang-a-lang duo-guitar sound brought to mind what one typically hears from Rickenbacker guitars, yet these weren't those such type of guitars that I know of, but them along with the power and tightness of the drums and bass you knew that you were seeing a band that has for years developed second nature instincts with each other.

 

They played their free show for roughly over an hour to a very appreciative crowd of indie rock die-hards covering probably about 16-18 tunes in total, while being beckoned with cheers back to the stage to finish their set with a two more songs encore.

 

With that, just like what you can expect at club shows, they hung around for a good while chatting it up over a few beers with fans in a very down-to-earth normal guys approachable way.

Went to see Chicago at Riverbend last Saturday. The show was excellent. I was disappointed that he Doobie Brothers backed-out, but Chicago made up for it by playing over 2 hrs. Their new leader singer/bass player, who took Michael Cetera's place did a good job. They played most of their hits. Good time!

If I had free tickets to see Nickelback I'd go...

 

Whereas I've never considered them anywhere near my favorite band, I never fell into the camp that so vehemently hated them either. I pretty much considered that over-the-top hatred to be folks getting caught up in a social trend that had very little legitimate basis other than their tunes being played to death on the radio, which could easily be said about a lot of other bands.

 

It may not be a popular viewpoint, but I despised Guns N' Roses far more that I ever did hearing Nickelback tunes. I like a couple of G N' R songs, but was mostly irritated by that whiny cat shrill of Axl's that people called singing, but just look at the widespread popular sensation they became.

 

Nickelback is a hard working band that has paid their dues with constant touring and 9 total albums, and haven't done too shabby since their 2001 breakthrough release "Silver Side Up", and in many country's worldwide they've charted quite decently with every release thereafter.

 

You're likely to see a solid rocking band that through tons of experience know how to bring it, and rock your socks off. :ylsuper:

The lot isn't the biggest, but there's a fairly large field(s) behind the school/church areas that you can park in. We went on Saturday Night last year (albeit before the concert) and had no issues parking. By the time we left it had filled up quite a bit.

I wasn’t able to locate any videos of them to get an idea of how they sound, and in searching also found an L.A. based band named Wayward Son(s) who pretty much are a similar style classic rock cover band.

 

I probably don’t have to tell you that both bands’ names were inspired by the Kansas song - “Carry On Wayward Son”, but just putting it out there just in case the connection wasn’t made.

The day was sweltering hot, and then by 8:00 p.m. the rains briefly came to cool things off to create a pleasant evening perfect for summertime outdoor music on Fountain Square on Friday night in Downtown Cincy.

 

"Clap Your Hands Say Yeah" had to cancel their headlining gig for the Friday Indie Summer Series, so warmups, and local favorites Motherfolk stepped up to the plate and handled the spot like seasoned champs serving up their powerful energetic feel good brand of universal heartland folk rock popularized by the likes of England's Mumford and Sons, Iceland's Of Monsters and Men, west coast hippies Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Denver's The Lumineers and, The Avette Brothers from North Carolina to name a few.

 

They took the stage at 9:30 after other locals and 5 piece "See You In The Funnies" got the crowd going with a 45 minute set of a loose and fun brand of indie rock. The evening began at 7:00 also with a 45 minute set from locals BUCKO.

 

Motherfolk has a large local following which was made clear by the huge enthusiastic crowd on hand dancing, clapping, and singing along to their songs, along with a cross section of many other folks out to enjoy a breezy evening of casual fun with a beer, and the sounds of summer.

 

Motherfolk is made up of a solid 6 piece duo-lead vocals w/ electric and acoustic guitars out front, rounded out with rhythm guitar, bass, drums, and a female keyboard player.

 

The two guys up front kept the crowd engaged with fun banter and clowning around between songs creating a fun and lively atmosphere where the whole band feels like one big happy family of friends singing along with their tunes whether a mic was in each of their faces' or not.

 

They showered the very appreciative and peaceful crowd with a lively and powerful 90 minute set that left smiles on everyone's faces, and then left the stage to greet their fans at the T-shirt booth, while the rest of the large cheerful crowd slowly dispersed to continue their fun Friday evening wherever they will.

I am sooo bummed to have missed Mother Folk (had a conflict and ended up in Louisville for the evening for a family event). I’m glad to hear there was a good crowd cheering them on. I definitely want to catch them sometime. Fountain Square events, especially at night are always a good time.
