Lexington Heralds Rating the State

Featured Replies

I guess if you are a Lincoln CO. fan you need to find the dark horse thread. The patriots are going through the season like Braxton Miller goes through the line, low and hard. Maybe.... if the pats get a couple of wins in the playoffs they will get a little RESPECT! GO PATS!:dancingpa

Lincoln County has been impressive this season, but you have to admit their opponents have been lacking. Remember, they've beaten Garrard County (1-5), Whitley County (1-5) and South Laurel (2-4). They're primed to pick up a win over a weak McCreary Central team this Friday. They do have a win over Rockcastle County, although at this point the Rockets aren't the type of team they usually are.

I know you can only play who is on your schedule, but you have to be realistic when comparing yourself against other schools. Keep in mind that while Lincoln has played well, they are a Class AAAA school. I'm not sure if they could even qualify for the playoffs in District 4 (Male, PRP, X, Manual), District 5 (Trinity, etc.) or District 7 (Lexington). They might even struggle in District 6.

This doesn't mean Lincoln doesn't have a nice team. It just means that Class AAAA football in Kentucky is pretty strong. Don't let the #34 ranking upset you.

An interesting point on the Lexington 4A district:

21. Lafayette 6-0

23. Tates Creek 6-0

24. Dunbar 0-6

28. Woodford 5-1

I KNOW strength of schedule matters but Woodford beat Dunbar.

Sometimes I think Cantrell needs to ask himself, "what have you done for me lately?"

Who has Hoptown played so far this year? And who is their win against? It's hard to understand how a team that is 1-4 is a top 25 team in this state.

Rambler - I agree - the poll creators dont often pay too much attention to much past the top 5 of each class and they definitely give more credibility to previous years performance(s) than is truly deserved or warranted.

Beechwood will always get more credit because of their awesome history - even with coaching changes - tradition speaks volumes to the pollsters - I guess.

Imo you are correct EE, I do think that Beechwood deserves high rankings though, they have proven themselves year in and year out. Like I have said before, Raceland could get Budweiser as a sponsor - through the years we have been Beechwood aged - LOL! The one that really threw me was Bath rated so low. To me that shows you the pollsters go a lot on previous history and stength of schedule, quality wins, etc. But who knows? Like cville said, it give all of us has beens something to talk about and can provide some locker room/fieldhouse material and that is about it.

You may be right. LC didn`t make the playoffs last year in district 8. They are a much improved team this year. All Patriot fans are a little excited about the squad and the way the coaches has them playing!:D

There are no "pollsters" involved with the Cantrall Ratings. The ratings are based strictly on the numbers — wins and losses, margin of victory and defeat and strength of schedule.

Bath County may be 4-1, but they haven't played a strong schedule and they were beaten soundly by Lexington Christian.

On the other hand, Beechwood has played its usual tough non-district schedule and performed well against some of those teams. That's why they're ranked so high, not because of tradition.

Against in-state teams, the only games that count in the Cantrall Ratings, Hopkinsville has close losses to Mayfield (35-34) and Christian County (24-20) aside from their blowout loss to Male. Their other loss was to Memphis Ridgeway, which is ranked #9 overall in Tennessee (by the Massey Ratings) and #3 in Class 5A in the AP poll.

Their win was over Pendleton County, which was on the schedule only because Alcoa (Tenn.) dropped out of Trigg County's bowl game this summer, leaving Hoptown scrambling to find another game.

Those are some tough losses.. It would be nice to see them get a quality win before I could consider them a top 25 team at this point in the season though. That's just my opinion. But I heard a lot of good things about them before the season started.

There is never a perfect ranking. It is nothing more than eye candy, but it does make for good conversation...

JMO there may not be "pollsters" so to speak, but someone, somewhere is choosing the info/criteria to put in to thr computer and then someone is anylizing the data, results,etc.. What I was saying is that basically my response to the Question/comment by EE was basically the same thing that you are saying. I do however belive that someone could look at what a team is doing in the present season more than what they do. Imo Bath deserves to be higher than they are. I apologize for jumping in on a post and quote that you made of an EagleEye post, I however was discussing this topic in this thread with EagleEye as he had answered my post. Just wanted to add .02 more cents in.

Basically, there is a formula that figures in the score of team's game and the quality of the opponent, based on their performance. It's based strictly on numbers.

Bath County's schedule is weak. Their first three wins were over the teams ranked #38, #41 and #50 in 2A by Cantrall. They beat Fairview then got spanked by Lexington Christian.

The Massey Ratings have Bath at 27th in Class A, not out of line with their Cantrall rating, and with a strength of schedule ranking in the lower half of Class A.

How can Trigg County be ranked 5th in Class 2A ahead of both Ft. Campbell & Caldwell County. Trigg blew a 21 pt lead at home & lost by 7 to the Falcons & were shut out on the road 17-0 by the Caldwell County Tigers.

Thanks Rambler! I sure am glad to see that someone is giving Bath just a little bit of credit. I realize the loss to LCA did not help Bath. Although the game was somewhat closer than the final score reflected. I just cannot make myself believe that there are 20, let alone 33 class A teams better that Bath County this year. Maybe we can gain some respect with a good effort at Paris. Good luck Rams the rest of the way. It must be nice to have a bye before the trip to Owingsville!! ;)
