Issues In Downtown Pikeville This Weekend

Featured Replies

letter - University of Pikeville

Letter from University of Pikeville President. Looks like there is a Neo-Nazi organization forming a rally downtown this weekend, and anti-racism groups coming in to counter them. Could get dangerous in Pikeville. Anyone have more details on this?

Seems to be an uptick in these sort of rallies lately.

Is this not considered a "hate group"? Saw where the city was obligated to let them rally and perform free speech, but I would feel like a group like this should be excluded from that. I don't know, that's just me.

I currently live in Pikeville and here is the scoop from what I understand......

Basically the Traditionalist Workers Party (or essentially a neo Nazi hate group) identified Pikeville as a target area due to it's high density of Caucasian citizens and its grossly high unemployment rate. As we know, Eastern Kentucky is one of the most povern stricken areas in the nation(although Pikeville is doing pretty good for itself these days) and this group is trying to take advantage of that by instilling hate speech.

It was announced a few months ago that they had organized a rally in Pikeville and at Jenny Wiley State Park in Prestonsburg (since they cannot be denied access to a state park). Ever since the announcement the communities of Pike and Floyd county have been trying to prevent the group from coming in. Politicians and city leaders in Pikeville have been trying to prevent the group from coming. Senator Ray Jones has been leading the charge to prevent this from happening but so far there is nothing they have been able to do except pass an ordinance preventing people from wearing hoods or masks.

In light of all of this, other "rally's" have been planned. An anti-fascist group is supposedly coming in to oppose the Traditionalist Workers Party, and a "Peace Rally" was scheduled to be held at UPIKE. The peace rally was intended to have speakers such as Ray Jones, Allison Grimes, and many other state leaders, as well as religious leaders from all faiths. This was going to be held at UPIKE and was shaping up to be a wonderful event but this was canceled yesterday due to fears and safety concerns.

So now that leaves us with pretty much the neo Nazis and anti-fascists and supposedly state agencies, Dept. of Homeland security and other agencies are preparing for what could be a potentially dangerous situation. I have read that the Traditionalist Workers Party chose Pikeville after carefully studying the population, law enforcement and security capabilities, etc.

Personally, I don't look for much to happen. Maybe some yelling, maybe a fist fight or two, but I am not expecting a major act of terrorism or anything. I have read that an ANTIFA group is coming in and they are known to incite violence. Who know's what will happen really, but as a resident of downtown Pikeville I guess I will have a front row seat for the shot.

I know one thing, I will keep my guns close by tomorrow. Just in case. :D

They were all over Northern Ky during Obama's administration 2 years before the election. It's not something new, it's not some new found racist rights or privilege. Stop looking for cause and effect. Stupid small minded people hate, period. I've noticed an uptick in them being more vocal since Black Lives Matter has come on the scene. Like I said stupid people hate, they don't need a reason. It's usually the same poeple driving around popping up here and there.

Any clue why the UPIKE Pres would encourage students to "go visit someone in Lexington, Kentucky; Charleston, West Virginia; or Whitestown, Indiana?" Seems like an odd selection of cities. For example, Whitestown, IN is 345 miles and 5 hrs. & 21 minutes from Pikeville.

I sleep just fine. I've seen plenty of racism my whole life from blacks and whites. I've heard things I wouldnt repeat out of all peoples mouths regardless of color. You go ahead and act like it's something new. You know it isn't. Stupid doesn't discriminate. The only thing worse in my book than the actual racists are the race mongers who seek to proliferate race with an agenda. IMO you're either part of the solution or part of the problem. I know what I am . Everyone needs to decide where they stand. President Trump wasn't president for 47 years of my life. Funny, racism still existed. Peoples agenda isn't hard to see through. But go ahead you guys knock your srlves out while pretending to be part of the solution!

Uninvited outsiders come in, do their damage, and leave the citizens of Pike County to clean up their mess. Sounds about right.

Hopefully much ado about nothing.

Not even worth the effort.

Good we agree.

One thing I would like to know... how do you consider yourself part of the solution and "us guys" part of the problem?

Quick asnswer is you don't want to talk about racism. You want to look for someone to blame for racism. Just waiting for " you guys " to go ahead and blame The President. I guess he was racist when he tripled the funding for the HBCU's over our last President. There is no Boogeyman who makes people racist. I'm teaching my kids that the system is not rigged against them, there are rules and laws. They do not need special exceptions because they are more than capable as an intelligent human being to compete and achieve anything they are willing to bust their behinds for. THEY ARE NOT VICTIMS. No-one determines their self worth except themselves. Not everyone is going to like you and it's not always because of race. I do not pre judge anyone and my kids are taught not too either. Give a fool the opportunity to show his foolishness. How am I part of the solution? It's called self responsibility, I teach mine they will teach theirs. We are not blaming an entire country, administration, state, group for racism. " You guys" want to blame whos at fault. The individual is, that's who. The racist political game that you guys want to play doesn't solve a thing. In fact it pushes people away who aren't on the agenda and furthers the divide. This is the country with the best opportunity and treatment of it's citizens in the world. We focus on what we have in common, not our differences. All people can be my friend, but not all people will. No boogeyman just a fact of life.
