Thought there might be a thread on this by now, considering how sexist and awful Trump is towards women.

Wife works in that field. Vast majority of the newly hired workforce at her place of employment are women.

Daughter is very interested in this as a career option. Glad to see support for this.

Really fast growing field. At least in the Cincy area there are a TON of jobs.

She has participated in a STEM program and GEMS (Girls in Engineering Math Science) program locally at the community college. She's a HS sophomore and just started to get mail from schools around the country wanting her to consider them. "Right now" she wants to major in mathematics and possibly become an actuary or similar profession.

Why do more females not go into engineering and technology? The job market for a female in engineering already is very good as companies strive for diversity. It was always a goal when I worked in that field, and we could never find enough women engineers....plenty of accountants and IT staff, but not engineers.

In my experience, not many women excel as programmers. The jobs are there for qualified female developers and the ones with whom I have worked have been good ones. My current project officer is a woman, our QA/QC tester is female, and our receptionist is also a woman. However, out of about 25 developers and network administrators.

 

The most talented programmers with whom I have worked have been men and the majority of them were born in India. The schools in this country are not producing enough qualified men or women to fill the demand for programmers.

 

However, I do not believe that the government should be spending money recruiting anybody into a particular field based on their sex, race, or ethnicity. Women are already earning college degrees at a much higher rate than men are.

 

If we must have a Department of Education, one of the things it should be doing is encouraging all American students capable of filling high paying technical jobs to develop the appropriate talents for those jobs.

I think a lot of it gets hard wired into girls at a very young age. I've had friends that teach math and science tell me that most of the girls they teach already feel uninterested in those subjects before they ever get to high school even.

 

I don't know whether it starts at home or in elementary or middle schools, but it's so much earlier than steering them to STEM classes in high school or college. Like anything worth doing, fixing it won't be easy.
