10th Region Recap and Rankings - 2/20/17

Featured Replies

It's tourney time! Without further ado, let's take our "next-to-last look at the 10th this season.

1. Campbell County (26-4, 10-1 region). The Camels finished the season on a high note, vanquishing Boone County and Ryle on the road. Seniors Garren Bertsch and Cole Hegyi are both candidates for first team all-region honors, averaging 18 points and 5 boards apiece. They will face the winner of the Calvary Christian - Silver Grove play-in game on Wednesday.

2. Paris (23-7, 14-1). Paris is also led by a pair of potential first team honorees in senior swingman Jekobi Wells and junior guard Eric Johnson, averaging 17 and 15 respectively. Johnson averages nearly 44% from distance, and Wells is the squad's leading rebounder. The Hounds enter tournament play on a modest 3-game streak and will face Bourbon County on Tuesday.

3. Clark County (19-11, 9-3 region). The Cardinals dropped their only contest last week to Henry Clay in a game that was close throughout. The Cards have fashioned a very nice season without a single senior in the lineup and are paced by Ryan Cooper, Will Philpot and Jordan Graham. Coach Cook's squad looks to return to the regional tournament after a rare 2-year absence, but must first get past Montgomery County on Wednesday.

4. Scott (17-11, 6-1 region). Coach Fromeyer's charges head into the postseason having lost 5 of their last 7 games. POY candidate Jake Ohmer paces the Eagles as one of the region's most efficient scorers as Scott faces off against Bishop Brossart in the district 37 semis on Wednesday.

5. Bracken County (15-13, 10-7 region). POY candidate Austin Crawford leads coach Jason Hinson's Polar Bears at 25ppg and has been getting consistent help from Cooper Engnes and Brady Jones. The Bears are the favorites to take home the 39th district trophy in many a year, with their first order of business the St. Patrick Saints on Tuesday.

6. Pendleton County (18-11, 9-5 region). Dontaie Allen, the only sophomore in the regional POY picture, leads the 10th at 29PPG, and will be counted upon heavily to get the Wildcats through the 38th. Harrison County provides the opposition on Monday evening.

7. Mason County (15-15, 7-6 region). The Royals must advance past Augusta on Monday to avoid their first losing season in nearly three decades. One of the surprises in the 10th has been the emergence of junior guard Leevi Dunaway, who relies on getting to the basket and drawing fouls to get his nearly 23PPG. Tyrion Fox, the lone senior on the squad, leads in rebounding at 6.6 per game since his return to the lineup midway through the season.

8. Bourbon County (12-18, 5-8 region). The Colonels didn't finish out the season as hoped, dropping four straight. Titus Ransom and Ameryon Blackburn pace Coach Sosby's squad at 16.9 and 15.5PPG, and need a big game from the reserves to get by Paris in the district opener.

9. Bishop Brossart (10-19, 6-6 region). The young Mustangs have hung in but dropped a lot of close ones this season, including last week's contests against Mason County and Lloyd. Seems like there is always a pretty good team from the 37th that doesn't advance to the region, and the record isn't entirely indicatave of how Brossart has improved as the season has progressed.

10. Montgomery County (7-22, 3-10 region). The Indians still hope to get Brennan Canada back for the postseason, we will see. The Indians did notch an impressive win over Harrison County last week behind a 26/10 performance from Pharoah Davis. Clark County will provide a very tough test for MoCo in the first round of the district 40 tourney.

The rest:

11. Nicholas County (16-12, 8-6). The Jackets have been a pleasant surprise on the boys and girls sides this year, and have won 5 of their last 6. First up is Robertson County on TUesday; a team that Nicholas has already defeated twice behind Spencer Norris and Trent Letcher.

12. Augusta (11-15, 6-7). The Panthers head into district tournament action riding a 6-game tailspin, and must slow down the pace against Mason County and get big contributions on the glass to advance.

13. Harrison County (4-25, 2-13). To say the least, this has been a disappointing season for the Thorobreds, who go up against Allen and the Pendleton County Wildcats on Monday.

14. Robertson County (15-13, 5-7). Mason Burden looks to lead the Devils to a mild upset victory over Nicholas County.

15. Calvary Christian (14-16, 4-6). The Cougars should get their 15th win of the season in the 37th play-in game against Silver Grove.

16. St. Patrick (8-22, 1-11). Ben Swolsky and family friend Baylen Bauer (44% from 3-point land) hope to pull the upset in the "draw vs. seed" game.

17. Silver Grove (5-21, 0-7). The only team not to win a region game in 2016-17.

Player of the week:

Let's give it to MaCo's Leevi Dunaway and MoCo's Pharoah Davis this week.

Games to watch:

All of them. It's tourney time!

Harrison County vs. Pendleton County is LIVE now ...

CLASSIC HITS 1400

Isn't this just the best time of year? Underdog Harrison County up 8 on Pendleton County at the half and Augusta hanging tough vs. Mason County.

First if you check your stats Nicholas is not just a two man team. Logan Stafford, Sam Hamilton and Wes Sapp all are right there with Morris and Letcher. If I'm not mistaken Sapp Stafford and Hamilton have actually had really big games at end of year. Not to mention the Drew Davis coming off the bench and being a big boost. 5 guys are near double figures in scoring. Stop one another has stepped up. Last game of season Hamilton had 18 and Stafford 24 pts in win Morris 10 Letcher 5 and Sapp 2 just to show diversity.

This is the greatest time of year. Win or go home. We prognosticators, analyst, statistical gurus, homers and general agitators are totally irrelevant (as if we ever were) because the kids on the floor and the Coaches determine their own fates. No more excuses about poor seeding or draw, sickness, poor officiating, just had a bad game, etc., etc. It's the final score only that determines who moves on and who doesn't, period.

Just a couple of intangible, non-statistics that count this time of year IMHO, successful teams are usually made up of seasoned players and Coaches that have experienced post season success and have multiple weapons and who execute as a TEAM that advance. Campbell and Paris meet the criteria. Who else will step up?

Got to. Mention GRC in a team that will step up IMO.
