Down to 4 players...free throw shooting rule

Featured Replies

Situation: team down to 5 players, as player is driving in for a layup he is fouled, comes down hard and sprains ankle badly, has to be helped off the court and is out of the game. There is no one to come in for him and team has to finish with 4 players. There are 2 free throws to shot and obviously the injured player can't shoot them. How is this handled by rule? Does the shooting teams coach pick someone to shoot the free throws...the opposing teams coach? This very thing happened to us this weekend and the refs were at a loss as to what to do.

I'd make the Coach shoot them...:lol2:

Seriously I'd guess it would be any other player could be designated to shoot them.

You need more players!

According to Rule 8-2

The free throw(s) awarded because of a personal foul shall be attempted by the offended player. If such player must withdraw because of an injury or disqualification, his/her substitute shall attempt the throw(s) unless no substitute is available, in which case any teammate may attempt the throw(s) as selected by the team captain or head coach.

Good...that's what we did.

I like this idea......then the players can chew him out if he misses. LOL

Interesting question BigV, I don't think I've ever seen that.

Rarely do things go so wrong.

I think there is Some kind of scenario where the opposing coach is allowed to pick who shoots free throws. Not sure when this would happen but I believe it does in some unorthodox circumstance

In this situation...go ahead and put 2 on the board. :)

That's a college rule.
