Mercer ought to be DOMINATING everybody in 2A. With the enrollment of a 3A school(possibly 4A) they should not lose a game all year. I honestly don't know how in the world the KHSAA is allowing this to take place. I honestly don't. There is alot of football to be played between now and Dec 2. I don't think everybody should pencil Russell, Belfry, or Mercer in because a few different teams could be there instead. Remember Fort Cambell last year, no one thaught they would be beat. Nobody did... So, we could go on and on with this all night long. I think what upsets Russell fans is the fact that they are getting NO respect from Mercer folk. Mercer fans talk about "running the table" or "going undefeated". I think Russell has done enough to earn the respect of everyone. I have not seen anyone disrespecting Mercer. We just ask for a little respect. Hopefully we'll get to see what team is better come Dec. 2 but until then.... maybe we won't though. Until then Mercer fans think Mercer is better and Russell fans think Russell is better. GOODNIGHT TO ALL!!!!

Russell has alot of talent this year... But talent alone doesn't win state championships ........... Last years team had proven experience as almost all the seniors played both ways at positons they fit very well.

This years group of Devils have the talent to match this level of play and by years end they can get there. Right now many areas have some growing to do .... just like last year ... that's the nature of 2a football.

 

I agree with GIAT wouldn't want to play Belfry - red army , especially on the road nor Mercer right now.

 

But both can start packing a lunch for later in the year...

What makes some think that Mercer and Russell are the top teams. Look back at last year in 2-A. It sure was not Russell who people were picking to win it all. It seems to me all the talk was about Ft. Campbell, Owensboro C., Belfry, and so on. I'm not so sure that either one of these two are the best team in 2-A.

 

We will all find out in December. If I were a gambling man I would say that neither one of these two will be in Louisville. The odds are against them. I hope they are both there although.

Wow, you've got to be kidding. You think Mercer is 3 TD better than Russell. I'll keep that in mind when you come to a Russell thread and talk about how good they are and how tough they will be to beat. Your true feelings come out.

 

I think Russell is a very good team from seeing them in the past and reading about them. I think we have a very good defense. I also think Mercer would put some points on the board. Both teams are going to be alot better at the end of the year. I guess since a comment about Mercer's enrollment comes up in every thread they should be able to name the score. Actually I'm kidding about naming the score. But the enrollment issue will just have to be brought up. That's going to get worse the longer the season goes. I think by the end of the year Mercer will have had the i's dotted and the t's crossed.

And one may be there. Both may be there. Injuries are a big part of winning. Who knows what will happen. We will find out.

 

Mercer is the number one team in the state. They are better than Russell. That is the only measuring stick we have right now. Will they win the championship?? The odds say no. Again we will find out.

Lets remember one thing...

Russell- In past five years State Semi-Finalist three times, state champion last year.

Belfry- State Semi-Finalist past three years, state champion twice

Mercer County and Harrodsburg- 0 State Semi Finals in past five years, 0 State Titles

 

Personally, as a Belfry fan I feel we are sitting pretty right now. Not #1 in rankings, not defending title holder, so the target on our back isn't as big as Russell and Mercer. Belfry also hosts the playoffs if they take care of business as they should. The Pirates also still have three nice challenges left to keep them fresh and improving come playoff time in Pikeville, Prestonsburg, and a 2A sleeper contender in Sheldon Clark who should enter undefeated and probably ranked in the top 5.

 

Just a refresher on the Pirates... they scored what was to be the game winning TD against Russell last year on the road but it was called back (and rightly so) for an illegal motion call... they held Russell to less than 50 yards in the second half after arguably the worst half they played all year to spot the Devils a 20-0 lead. From that team who was literally a butt flinch away from a state title they returned two 1000 yard rushers and a lot of starters on both sides of the ball.

 

I will enjoy reading "Russell vs. Mercer County" every week as long as it keep Belfry under the radar

According to last years khsaa handbook Mercer County had 691 students enrolled in 9-12, and Harrodsburg had 228.

 

So using this logic it equals to 919 students.
