Bardstown 33 Holy Cross (Louisville) 14

FINAL

Looks like the Cougars have some work to do. I honestly thought I would see an HC victory here. How did the Cougars look over all? Strengths/weaknesses?

That is a statement victory for B'Town.

Bardstown folks won't be on for a while because everyone is either at the Bourbon Festival partying or stuck in traffic on I-65 coming home from the game . . .

Folks, the Tigers are for real. They flat out beat Holy Cross up in this football game. Speed may kill, but when its accompanied by aggressive, punishing defense its that much better.

The game was actually closer than the final score indicated. In the first quarter, both teams had long drives stall on 4th down tries deep in the other's territory. On HC's 2nd possession, they drove down and had 1st and goal on the Tiger 1 yd. line. QB (Nauert) had been going from shotgun all game but goes up under center and fumbles the snap. He recovers it, but has to come out of game because he opened up a gash in his nose. On 2nd down, McDermott is in at QB, fumbles snap and recovers it. Nauert goes back in and runs in to Rodman on 3rd down run. He then overthrows McDermott on the 4th down play, and Bardstown takes over. They promptly drive it 95 yards and put it in, but miss the extra point.

Tigers force Rodman to fumble on next series, and then score on some "trickeration" (hitch pass to Graves and handoff to Kelvin Scott for 49 yard score), but again miss the 2 pt. try. Tigers dominate rest of 2nd qrtr defensively, and lead at half 12-0.

2nd half, Tigers come out, go 3 and out, and get their punt blocked. HC puts it in and kicks the PAT to make it 12-7. The next series was the drive of the game. Tigers go 80 yards, converting 3 3rd down plays in the process and get another long run by Scott for a TD. 19-7. Defense then takes over, end up sacking Nauert 6 times on the night overall, held HC to less than 170 yards total offense, and less than 2.5 yards per carry running the ball. Nauert ends up 6-19 passing.

However, with about 3 1/2 minutes to go, on 4th and 10 and the score 19-7, Nauert throws up a hail mary, is hit as he throws, and the dying quail is about to be intercepted, but McDermott comes from out of nowhere to snare the ball at the Tiger 1. Nauert punches it over from there to make it 19-14 with 3:23 to go. They elect NOT to onside, Bardstown gets it and the fullback Phillips takes it on a long run down to the HC 19. Scott runs for his 3rd TD of the game on the next play. 26-14 Bardstown. Then on ensuing series, Nauert gets picked by Vinny Calhoun for a 35 yd. INT return for TD.

Tigers dominated time of possession and were very good at 3rd down conversions. 410 yards total offense, 342 rushing. Scott was 21 carries, 142 yards, 2 TD's, 2 catches, 51 yards, 1 TD. The defense was phenomenal. This game was billed as B-Town's speed versus HC's power. Bardstown was far and away the more physical team, HC's coaches even conceded that. Several HC players came out with injuries, I hope they are O.K. McDermott is an excellent player, a marquis receiver to watch. Nauert was beaten up tonight, but he is only a sophomore and will be fun to watch the next couple of years. I can't give enough credit to the Tiger lineman, both sides of the ball.

Assuming the Tigers can take care of business the next several weeks, the next showdown will be with cross-town rival Bethlehem. I fully expect, though, that we will see a different (and hungrier) HC team come playoff time.

Congrats BTown! This is a big win!:thumb:

Hearsay...congrats to the Tigers on a big win...people down here in the western portion of the state were interested in seeing what developed. I knew from seeing Barsdtown last year against Mayfield that with what was coming back that the Tigers could be a threat and it appears that the are all that and more. Congrats on a big win over a very talented HC team...and best of luck the rest of the way.

Bardstown looks legit ! Honestly , I had my doubts about Holy Cross. I think they get a lot more ink than deserved by the C-J , BUT, they are having a fine year.

Good to see the "Georgia Pass" is still in the playbook at Bardstown. It was run to perfection in the closing seconds at Mayfield on the way to the 1981 State Championship. Very possibly the greatest play in Garnis Martin's esteemed coaching career!!!

Talked to someone close to the HC program...he was very impressed with Bardstown...said that their team speed killed them...

Bardstown V. Danville II. This will be a great matchup.

The Tigers will have to defeat HC again in the playoffs, I am sure, but yes that will be another war. If both teams are undefeated, who gets the home game this year?

I thought Nard was HC's QB.

I thought Nard was HC's QB.

He is. Its spelled N-A-U-E-R-T, but apparently pronounced like "N-A-R-T."
