January 24, 20179 yr You should consider I get the point 100% but I dont agree with the overall over reaching hysteria . I'm tired of dividing all of us by groups for political advantage from all parties just using people of all races for their own benefit .. all the while some people still miss that point , and that doesnt surprise me either . Even though you are guilty of dividing people by party and race?
January 24, 20179 yr Author I imagine I'll regret asking but how I am doing that ? esp by race - Of course we divide people by their political views , its part of being human. Doesnt mean I won't like a democrat , I love Bob Beckel . I'd 1000x times rather have a cold one with him than say .. Mcconnell .

You express zero desire to compromise or meet in the middle with your beliefs. You resort to name calling, sarcasm and snarky posts instead of searching for why someone with different beliefs from you would feel that way. I know what I am doing when I act like that. Do you?
January 24, 20179 yr Watch out the boogeyman is out to get ya'll. Be on close look out for code words from whitey . Would be almost funny if it didnt have so much perceived truth. Getslow you might be peering down from an ivory tower if you think average Americans got a big twinge of fear because somewhere along the 1000's of stump speeches Trump used a Nixon phrase. Heck he could quote Nixon word for word for 2 hours as 99% of America wouldnt know it . Whole thing is just sad . Are we ever going to get over it ? Trump sure to heck didnt win because of anything racial. You're seeing as through a glass, smugly, and you misunderstand me. It doesn't matter that Nixon said it. It doesn't matter who first said it at all. What matters is that it's in the cultural conversation and so it's meaning can be ascertained by the common understanding of the listeners. When Nixon declared that he was the law and order candidate, he was trying to appeal to the popularity of western films. He wanted folks to think of him as the sheriff, the guy who was going to clear the villains off the streets (the villains in this case were mostly anti-war demonstrators and civil rights agitators). Trump is no different. He wants you to think of him as the sheriff. He's gonna clean up this town, pilgrim. Where the trouble comes is in how you perceive that phrase "law and order". If you're sitting at home and watching the news and the world looks ever more confusing to you as Black Lives Matter protests hit the streets and teenage trans kids are asking for the extention of civil rights and there are marchers in the streets the day after Inauguration Day, you're probably thinking "I could do with a little order." If you're potentially on the receiving end of the "law and order", just like the protesters back in 1968 or those potentially marginalized by the new administration, you don't see it as a positive phrase. In any case, it's not important now that you understand it as an appeal to those classic westerns; the phrase has understood meaning to the people that hear it. It's the same with that paraphrase I used at the beginning of this post. Or if I were to say "the writing is on the wall" in reference to something certain to happen soon. I bet that if you asked 100 people, less than half would be able to tell you that both those phrases are biblical allusions. They have cultural meaning that extends beyond their source.

January 25, 20179 yr You may be correct on some points and I appreciate your honest answer , but i'm nor sure how what you described can be related to dividing people by race . I'm speaking on the long history of comments made from both of us. I know how to have a conversation with patience and understanding. It involves me listening and incorporating the opposing sides thought process into my reply. I also know how to push folks away with sarcasm, snark, shade and many many other tricks. I love off of emotion. If I am feeling like MLK I tone it down and search for middle ground. When I feel like Malcolm X I keep it real and frank. MLK brings people in. Malcolm X can bring people in sometimes but most times Malcolm pushes people away. When it comes to politics, unarmed blacks being shot by police, BLM, etc we are polar opposites. It doesn't matter what I say to you. It doesn't matter the approach. We can never get on the same page in these discussions. I'll be the first to admit I can be offputting but I'll also say that if you can't meet a middle ground with me then you aren't trying to reach a middle ground with me. To me, that is division. I specialize in meeting in the middle of people really want to meet in the middle. Intentions are usually easy to see.
January 25, 20179 yr What matters is that it's in the cultural conversation and so it's meaning can be ascertained by the common understanding of the listeners. If you have to explain what the term means, it's not, as you say, "in the cultural conversation". There IS no "common understanding of the listeners. I'm gonna go watch Jerry Orbach in "Law & Order." Oops, guess that's racist, too.
January 25, 20179 yr They took notes, white people are the problem, should feel guilty, and I quote "if you say you aren't racist its their job to shut you down because you are."
January 25, 20179 yr And about Steve Harvey..... Steve Harvey has a morning radio show that I used to listen to occasionally. On his show the past year he has spent a large majority of his time bashing Trump, bashing Trump supporters, bashing republicans and was pretty much a free commercial for Hillary Clinton. He bashed Trump so hard that a caller called in and said they might vote for Trump and he went off on the caller ridiculing them for their possible vote to Donald Trump. I thought it was pretty cold blooded to treat a listener like that but the listener should have known what was coming when they called and said that to Steve. Now, as much as Steve has said to his listeners about Trump, the way Steve went on after the election when Trump won....why didn't he tell his listeners he was going to meet Trump? Why did he go into hiding for a week after he met Trump? Only to call in to make a one time statement to address his meeting with Trump. I don't listen to his show anymore. Probably won't for a while. I heard he was back on the show yesterday and callers were going off on him so much he got his feelings hurt. Well, in my eyes I guess it is karma for how he treated the person who called into his show 6 months ago that said they might vote for Trump. Steve should have known what was coming. He brought it on himself. I'm curious about why you think Harvey did meet with Trump ? I have never listened to his show and don't necessarily recognize him as someone I would consider "political". Do you think it was at his request or Trumps ? Is there an ulterior motive on either or both sides ? Just doesn't strike me as a "normal" course of business at this point in the game.

He said that Trump's people reached out to him to meet and that Obama encouraged him to take the meeting. After they met they said they were old friends and that they had ties from their beauty pageant work. FWIW, Obama's camp has denied being involved with this meeting. It seemed weird to me that he met with Harvey but it always seemed weird to me that Trump chose to meet with two former football players, a rapper and a comedian to show his diversity and concern for the inner city.

This seems like a way to get some insight, so I can't find fault with that. With the vitriolic hate speech that has been directed toward Trump from some of the other diversity based individuals, I can understand why those meetings aren't taking place. Still a head scratcher on Steve Harvey meeting though. I really like him, or liked his past work, but I'm not sure he has the pulse of a particular demographic that really needs the outreach.

January 25, 20179 yr I hear you but Steve Harvey spewed a lot of that vitriolic hate and he met with him. I agree, but maybe their past relationships were the bridge to that discussion as well. I hope something good can come out of the meeting. All Journeys begin with the first step.
