I may be wrong, but I think they are going to try to humanize Kylo and that ongoing battle pyschologically will be a strong theme going forward. Again just my opinion, but I think it may have been necessary. Think how epic of a moment it was when Vader was humanized when he told Luke he was his father. I think seeing Kylos face serves the same purpose.
