Either Move Kickoffs Back or Let the Ball Be Returned From the Endzone....

Featured Replies

....or ban Soccer players from kicking for the Football Team.

Something has to be done before one of the most exciting plays in football (the Kickoff Return) becomes extinct.

What say you?

I agree, with the exception of banning soccer players.

You must not have been at the Bell County game last week! The referee allowed the first Bell opening kickoff to be returned out of the endzone. This has happened before. Seems the refs don't see it that much in the mountains and caught them off guard. Bell's kicker, a former soccer player, then kicked 7 more caught in endzone in air for touchbacks that were not returnable!

I would like to see it moved back. The kickoff return is a very exciting part of the game.

I don't know...but all the squib kicks we have seen in the mountains with the ball bouncing through the mud and players dogpiling....that's not real exciting either!

I say APNW would be bored at CCH games if he loves seeing kick returns. The opponents don't get many with Popham out there.

I don't mind the rule much, a good kicker is a weapon, and I don't see why you should penalize teams who have developed / found one.

It's called "Special Team" for a reason, and if your team has a really special, "Special Team", then more times than not (on any level) you win more games. CovCath has had three great kicker over the last couple of years, and even the CovCath Crazies have a cheer for their kicker when he kicks it into the endzone.....

Good kickers could still be a weapon and maybe even more of a weapon if you move the kickoff line back or let the opposition take a chance on returning the ball.

Say the CovCath kicker can put it 5 yards deep in the endzone every time. Why not move the line back to the 35 or 30 and/or allow the ball to be returned no matter what? A good kicker might be worth even more then.

The fun would be that the other team has the option to take a chance on a return that may not even make it to the 20 or could be a TD. Meanwhile if the other team has a poor kicker that can only reach the 20 CovCath might enjoy great field position each time.

The kicker wouldn't be taken out of the game and the return man would be put back in.

Or don't use kicker friendly balls.

NFL rule has "K ball rule" which is a brand new ball right out of the bag before EVERY kick, decreases distance and hang time.

Ever wonder why NFL kickers kick it to the 5-10 yard line all the time, yes they kick from the 30, but it still is 60-65 yards. And many kickers in high school kick them 70plus. This is why.

Trinity also has a nice kicker I think he may only have 2 kickoffs not touchbacks, and Trinity kicksoff a lot

Let the ball be returned from the endzone.

Popham is a great kicker. He is highly ranked on Prokicker.com camp rankings nationally as #21 kicker/punter combo. Bell's kicker, Merrick, is ranked not too far behind him with fairly comparable numbers 43rd overall (#1 Class of 2009). Popham is a senior. Merrick is a sophomore in his second year as varsity starter. Bell, unlike most mountain teams, has established the kicking game. This will surely prove to be an advantage come Rockcastle and playoff time. Popham and Merrick both have strong hangtimes. College recruiters look for touchbacks WITH hangtimes, not just drilled into endzone. Even if returns were allowed as in D-1 ball, these guys have long, high kicks. Pophams average distance at camp for kickoffs was around 65 yards with 70 yards the longest. Merricks longest was 68, at time a new Kentucky camper record for Prokicker, only to be broken later this summer by Popham. Merrick's distance was shorter, but his hangtimes were longer than Pophams. The kicking game is an exciting part of football. Just ask Bobby Bowden, or Payton Manning, and other great players and coaches whose fate rode on the foot of a kicker on a Saturday or Sunday!

Leave it the way it is don't penalize teams for having a good kicker. More teams than not don't have kickers that get it to the endzone anyway.

Let the ball be returned from the endzone.

No Way. This would mean the Birds would have to play their best atheletes on this one special team. Why not give your starters a breather. You and Me both know that Dale likes to use mostly Sophmores and sometimes Freshman to cover Kickoffs. Keep your Skilled Defensive players off the field if you can. Could you imagine if Victor Anderson would of been able to return all of the kickoffs last Saturday. He would of broke one of them, it was just a matter of time.
