The 66-67 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Runner-up CovCath Basketball team

Featured Replies

Are you old enough to remember the game or were you there? CovCath up 1 point with about 6 seconds left and lose what would have been the 1st 9th Region Team to win a Sweet Sixteen.

Well Covington Catholic will honor that team, the 1st team in CovCath history to win a Ninth Region Championship and they were the 1st of what would be four straight CovCath teams to win the Ninth Region.

On Friday night 1-6-17 at half time of the CovCath vs. Conner game your Colonels of 50 years ago will be honored. So if your old like me, and you attended that game or even listen to it, come out to the game this Friday and show the current Crazies what you were like way back then, and cheer on your team one last time.

Just mentioned that the video is on the web, and before I could get it posted, Just Jim shows it. Thanks!

The last 2:40 of the radio play-by-play (from the Western Kentucky station) is also on the web.

That was before my days of broadcasting the state tournament, but surely would have liked to be there.

Remember the game well. You said first of 4 straight regional titles. I think it was 5 straight- 67 thru 71.

I remember the '67 tournament due to Breathitt County, a neighboring county, representing the 14th region with a very good team. They started Larry Noble, Eugene Cundiff, BG Lovings, Goldie Salyers, and Fred Combs, and those 5 played most of the game. Coach Fairce Woods was kind of like Adolph Rupp in that he didnt sub very much. They lost only 2 or 3 games all year. They lost to Earlington in Saturday morning's semifinals after leading for most of the game and losing in the last few minutes after a couple of starters fouled out. To this day those Breathitt players feel if they hadn't got in foul trouble they would have won that semifinal and played CovCath for the championship.

I remember where I was the moment Earlington hit the final shot.

Wasn't there but tuned in.

I am not old enough to remember it (barely) but I must say I'm surprised there are this many BGPers that do remember... The BGP demographic is way younger than that. I did hear about this game and team a lot growing up though, as the example about how "snake bit" northern Kentucky was in the state tourney. That perception only got worse when Holmes lost a heartbreaker in 1978 because the 67 CCH team and the 78 Holmes teams both had a Schloemer and both had the games won in regulation until a last second shot. It's great that both schools and the ninth region have exorcised those demons.

Congrats guys, hope the game and tribut is packed this weekend.

And not to further derail the thread, because I do respect and appreciate what this team did, but I think it is interesting that these 5 straight CCH region champs were followed by 4 straight from NewCath, then 3 straight from Holmes. Those kinds of streaks don't happen often, especially back to back to back.

Actually the streaks were not back to back to back. Holy Cross won the title in 1972, then NCC followed with 3 straight, then Holmes with 3 straight.

Video is very interesting for multiple reasons, but wow, how close CCH was. If Earlingtons first buzzer beater shot draws any iron, game over. Instead hits only backboard creating a perfect entry pass to the paint. Not too far off from NC States way of beating Houston.

I was only about 10 when this game was played but my father and I listened on our transistor radio in the kitchen. Great game that CovCath should have won. Covcath had some great teams and players during that period.

Someone from Dixie once told me that they should have won all four titles while my old man was playing but the state (whoever) kept hosing them because they were a Catholic school.

His senior year, my old man didn't even unpack his bag.
