Hoping someone on here that knows more about cars than I do can help me out with a car issue.

 

Went to leave work this afternoon and my car wouldn't start. It's a 2009 Altima with a push-start. The "key" light on the dash was on, so I assumed the key fab battery was bad. Since I work at a parts place, no big deal. Replaced that and still nothing. So we got a jump-box and checked the battery, which showed it was fine, but still nothing.

 

The brake lights come on when I push the brake down to start it, so I don't think it's a fuse issue.

 

Anyone have any idea what it could be as I sit at my desk waiting for a tow?

I had a issue like that on my car once with the key fob. I had to hold it up right against the push button start and it let me start it.

 

This probably has nothing to do with your problem, but you might give it a try. :lol2:

Push button could have gone out. A buddy of mine had that happen in his Camaro.

Same here. To make matters worse, wife has been hassling me to buy a truck for a couple years now...This is only going to make the needling that much worse. :lol2: :idunno:

My first thought would be to try and reboot the car, but since is a push start I have no idea how you would do that. (never had a push start vehicle.)

Here's my advice. Put jumper cables on it from another car. I know you said the battery said it was charged. It likely is. But that charge can simply effect the electric signal all the way from the ignition switch thru the solenoid to the starter to the battery. If you got cables, i'd start there.

 

Effectively, it's like turning your computer off for a soft boot when the screen freezes.

I've never had a push start vehicle and hope I never have to, but I would be looking at the fuse/relay that controls the push start. Also like Duece said, the button could have went out or have a dirty contact. I would check the relay or fuse first though as that will be an easy fix.

LOL. I guess it's convenient if you are apt to lose your keys often or don't want to turn your key to start the car. Outside of that, it's just something else to go wrong that you will (I promise you will) have to replace.

 

Funny story, my neighbor bought some sort of Mazda SUV last year, which has push button start. One day when he got home I noticed that he unloaded groceries and left the car running, I didn't think anything about it, just figured he planned on going back out. About four hours later I walk outside and the car was still running, so I called him and asked if everything was okay (he had a stroke a few months prior and I was concerned that he had had another medical issue) he said yeah everything's fine. I told him that his car has been running for hours and that's why I was calling, he said that he thought it turned itself off when he walks away since the key is in his pocket. I was legitimately concerned when I walked back outside and noticed that the car was still running, but got a laugh out of it after our phone conversation lol.

I hope I never own a car that drives itself.

I love the push to start. I drive one every day I work. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten in my personal vehicle and put the keys in my pocket, not thinking about needing them to start the vehicle. Also a big fan of the sensors on the door handle to unlock the doors.

Me too, trunk does it as well.

Can't those push-to-starts be reset? It may just need that done. I'd call a dealer and ask.
