Bowling Green Purples 13-0 at Fern Creek Tigers 11-2

Region 1 Championship

 

Owensboro looked to keep this one within a touchdown at the half until the Purples took the wind out of the Red Devils sails with a hook and ladder to Caruthers for a touchdown on a 3rd and long with around one minute left in the first half. That score put the Purples up 28-14 at the half and they never looked back, going on to win the game 50-21 with another running clock. The Red Devils were able to play the game the way they wanted, rushing the ball for an impressive 276 yards but that still wasn’t enough to keep it close against what may be the best Bowling Green team in history. Yeah, I said it, this is a special group of Purples.

 

Region 2 Championship

 

Region two featured one of the close games as well as an upset as mentioned earlier. Covington Catholic was considered the second best team in the class for the latter half of the season, apparently someone forgot to tell that to Fern Creek as they knocked off the Colonels 35-28. The Colonels actually outgained the Tigers in this one with 376 yards coming from a perfectly balanced attack, but in the end the Tigers ground game proved to be too much as they rushed for 304 yards. The Tigers only attempted two passes in this one and failed to complete either, but that didn’t matter as Kyree Hawkins and Devon Blincoe combined for 283 yards and four touchdowns to get the Tigers the victory.

 

This Week’s Games

 

Finally we are here and then there were four. I can’t really say finally as I wish football season played on throughout the winter, but you get the point. In the preseason poll, BGP pollsters had Bowling Green and Fern Creek ranked first and second. While Pulaski County and South Oldam came in at seventh and eighth.

 

That makes for interesting conversation as this week the preseason #1 and the preseason #2 face off in Louisville for a chance to reach the carpet in Bowling Green. It’s not likely that anyone in 5A beats Bowling Green this season, but this week the Tigers of Fern Creek get a shot at them at home. They are the only team to get a shot at Bowling Green at home in the playoffs and they are very similar to Greenwood, however I would give them an edge in athleticism. Will that be enough to pull off the upset, or will the Purples once again say that you’re not going to line up and run against this team and expect to win?

 

Bowling Green is the #1 scoring team in 5A, racking up nearly 48 points a game while giving up barely 10 per game.

The Purples are led on the ground by Jamale Carothers with 21 rushing TDs on the season along with nearly 1200 yards. Bowling Green has 6 others that have scored on the ground this season. In the air the Purples are led by QB Clark Payne who has passed for over 3,300 yards and 39 Touchdowns. His favorite receivers are Deangelo Wilson (14TD), Kenner(4), Brown(8) and Carothers(9) out of the backfield. The Purples Offense is as formidable as any in the state and will be a true test for the Tigers this week.

 

On Defense the Purples are led in tackles by Jhamir White (90), Dalan Cofer (83) and Jason Beason (66), but while they are the statistical leaders the Purples defense has a total of 21 players with double digits in tackles this season.

 

Fern Creek is scoring 36 points per game while giving up just over 13 points per game.

The Tigers are led on offense by Kyree Hawkins (1,293 yards and 21 rushing TDs) and Devon Blincoe (1,060 and 10) making for a formidable rushing attack. In the air they are led by QB Shamar Bryant with 18 Passing TDs on the season. Hawkins has 5 receiving TDs out of the backfield to go along with 5 more by WR Quartus Hearn.

 

Defensively the Tigers are led by a stingy DB group that has 15 Interceptions on the season. Fern Creek also has 18 Fumble recoveries on the season showing that between INTs and Fumbles they really get after it on the defensive side of the ball. The Tigers have 11 tacklers with over 50 tackles on the season led by Armon Wells with 116.

Looking forward to the game, just treated P88 for dinner because of all of his hard work covering the western part of the state again this season. He really did a great job again this year.

 

As far as the game is concerned, if Purples can hang on to the ball, I really like their chances. Very special team with very gifted players.

 

Fern Creek has some very impressive defensive stats (especially the 18 fumble recoveries), that has to be close to a record.

 

I love playing opponents with team speed. I think it makes our guys even play fastr. It usually doesnt take the crowd long to see how fast the Purples team speed really is. Should be fun.

 

Im still very high on the Purples (shocker, I know) and am calling a running clock late in the game. Good luck to both teams. Stay healthy and warm!
