I can't find an article, but I recall watching a pre-game show a year or so ago and they compared Newton's combine numbers to NFL athletes at other positions. From a combine standpoint only, he compared favorably in basically every category. For example, faster 40 time than some RB's, higher vertical than WR's, bench press equivalent to LB's, etc. It was incredible. I'll see if I can find it online.

Jackson is an athletic freak. Newton hit the genetic lottery.

I'm trying to find some combine-type numbers for Lamar but am struggling to do so. I've found 4 different times for his 40 yard dash: 4.37, 4.42, 4.47, and 4.58. It looks like he ran a 4.42 at Louisville.

 

Cam ran a 4.59 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine. He also had a 35 inch vertical, 10'6'' broad jump (10'8'' was listed as the all-time best for a QB). I can't find any of those measurements for Lamar.

That's not a comparison. Vick is a poor mans Lamar Jackson. Lamar Jackson is FAR from a limited passer. Obviously their games are more similar than Cam but I think you can make arguments for Lamar or Cam here.

Vick led the nation in passing efficiency as a Freshman. Didn't mean that he saw the whole field. Petrino is a GREAT playcaller. He makes Jackson look like a better passer than I think that he truly is.

I'll give you times where Jackson loses a little touch on his passes, but to say he is only a product of Petrinos system is ridiculous. Vick had good playcallers too. Every good QB does. That's sort of a requirement to be successful.

Vick was only given 1/2 of the field to read. Tebow was a very good college passer. They had to throw the ball, but the decision making wasn't theirs. Petrino helped make Lefleurs one of the nation's best passers. However, the system plays a HUGE part in it, just like it did for Jason White at Oklahoma.

One of Lamar's current limitations is passing for sure. He got WAY better in the off season and I expect the same after this year.

I have no doubt that next year he will be a 4500/(crazy to say this) 1500 guy. Numbers that are just ridiculous. He'll rely on passing more next year, I would assume.

4500? No way. That's an almost MVP type season in the NFL playing 16 games. He'll be great but 4500 is insanely high. 1500 rushing yards is reasonable.

If they get 14 games this year, he's on pace for 4046. If he were to average 346 in 13, or 321 for 14, he could get there. You are correct, that would be farfetched in addition to 1500 yards rushing. Guy's pretty exciting though, so...thought I'd throw it out there.

And as far as not taking that big hit...it's just a matter of time, it happens to ALL skill players eventually. Cam could/can take those big hits and get right back up because he's a freak of nature. LJ is a freak of nature too, but in a different way, he's not built the same way Cam is and probably won't take a big shot nearly as well as Cam did/does. Only time will tell.

Well, you're kind of projecting with this statement. If I had to take one NOW, based on Cam's history and what LJ has done this year, it's Cam. Now, maybe after 5 games into next season I might change my mind, and you are correct LJ does have room to grow and get better, which is a scary thought for opposing defenses.
