Mr. Football 10-27-16 Edition

Featured Replies

This year seems to be the most wide open race I can recall in a while. We are at the last week of the regular season and I have no clue who will win. I'm guessing Jake Johnson of Pulaski County and Walker Wood of Lafayette are the front runners.

Am I wrong? At this point of the season who else is there as possible finalists?

Johnson is an interesting case:

- Jake Johnson wins the lifetime achievement award for sure if that's how you choose to vote. Hard to argue with his career numbers and records.

- In terms of basing it on the snap shot of a single season he has very good numbers, but not sure good enough to win the award on a 7-2 team that finished 2nd in their District, but still very impressive number like you wish you could see out of a candidate

Right near 1000 yards from scrimmage and 11 Offensive TD's, 5 Defensive INT's, 2 Fumble Recoveries, and I want to say a couple kick return TD's.. truly a great all-around player

- The biggest knock on Johnson is going to be the recruiting aspect. This award is more pop culture than substance and without the impressive offer sheet I am sure people will discredit him.

How about Tanner Morgan as a viable candidate?

D-1 Commit= Check

Plays QB= Check

Plays for a 6A School in a Populous Area= Check

One of only two undefeated 6A Teams= Check

Solid Stats= Check

I think Jamale Carothers should definitely be among the front runners, but is hurt slightly because of BG having superior talent all over the field. His numbers are great, but they don't jump off the page at you like Walker Wood's do. He falls into the "best player on the best team" category.

Jamale also shares the backfield with one of the state's top QBs, who should probably be a Mr. Football candidate himself.

Another option who checks a lot of boxes is Jamale Carothers of Bowling Green

Trinity doesn't have a standout player, so now you have the best player on the second best team

D-1 commit, nice career, great stats, from one of the larger cities in KY..

If I were handpicking my 5 finalists with the best resumes:

Carothers

Morgan

Wood

Johnson

Wills- He wins the recruiting award and the most recognizable name, but his position hurts him

You're so good at this stuff, I've got to be pretty quick to beat you to the punch.

Speaking of BG's QB, what does everyone think of Clark Payne? He's certainly got the numbers.

Hypothetically, he could finish year with 4000 yds, 40+ TDs, only 2 or 3 INTs and a state championship. If he maintains his current pace and the Purples finish 15-0, he'll be very hard to ignore.

Agreed. I mentioned that on one of my podcasts this season.

Has a very legitimate chance at surpassing 10,000 career yards - Lifetime achievement award = Check

Surpassed 100 TDs last week (92 passing and 10 rushing) = Check

Can't disagree with your post at all. Someone should check the other 10,000 passing QBs see if they were Mr. Football. I'm not smart enough to figure it out : (

Spencer Blackburn from Trinity HAS to be in the mix.

Led his team to an undefeated regular season with wins over Ensworth, Brentwood Academy, Male and St. X. A threat both running and passing.

I am saying this with all intended respect...

Had you asked 90% of the site to name Trinity's starting QB they wouldn't have been able to do it.

He is a great player, but this simple fact alone tells me he will not be a Mr. Football Finalist, especially if you are trusting essentially many of the same people who put together the AP Polls to weigh in.

I wish Cooper's season would have gone a little better as there is no way Dante Hendrix should not be in this conversation. I understand why he isn't though as Cooper finished 6-4 but he has the stats on both sides of the ball plus lifetime award he has good numbers as well. I know he won't win but I wish he would get the recognition he deserves and be on the finalist list.

Good thing that people on this site don't vote for it then isn't it?

I've noticed people including stuff like DI commit, lifetime stats etc. Is that supposed to be criteria for the award?

Maybe he will and maybe he won't be a finalist but IMVHO he should be.

Agreed. I mentioned that on one of my podcasts this season.

I'm digging the podcasts, man. Props to you for having the ambition to make it happen.
