Very informative! Thanks for this. I know that local citizens are significantly taxed for public education. It becomes a double whammy when you send a child to a Private school and still get hit with the tax bill for the Public school.

Each of our son's families were hit with this. In addition we paid big taxes thru our business to schools our grandchildren did not attend.

I still vividly remember my dad telling me that if I believed that the local public school wasn't able to provide enough in the way of academics; he would be willing to foot the bill at the local private school. I told him that we would see how it went.

 

The public school education contributed mightily to a National Merit scholarship, BA magna at Vandy, PhD at Washington with all but one year paid as a TA, and first job out of graduate school at Harvard.

 

Not an entirely dissimilar academic experience for my avatar as she graduated summa from Georgetown College and is finishing her DPT at Bellarmine.

 

 

And I know that private schools are absolutely the best fit for many and my two children are WAY too small a sample size to draw any meaningful conclusions other than they took full advantage of what the local public school had to offer.

You should be very proud. I too have the good fortune of living in an area where the public school system is very, very good and our students graduate well prepared for the challenges of college and beyond. Sadly that cannot be said for many publics, regardless of how many tax dollars get thrown into them. Without parental support or motivated students, schools become just a place where kids are stored during the day, hallways are unsafe, and students are being promoted through grade levels and graduated even though they are Ill prepared to succeed at the next level, be it college or a workplace.
