District competition begins. District 6, with all three teams in the Top 10, sees it's first district matchup with #2 Paintsville playing #9 Fairview, who wins this matchup? Undefeated #6 Nicholas County takes on Paris, will Nicholas County stay unbeaten? #8 Louisville Holy Cross takes on #10 Louisville County Day, who will show their superiority in Louisville Class 1A? Three Top 10 teams are Open this week, will that help them prepare, or make them slow starting next week? What will the Top 10 look like next week? Who will move up? Who may move out?

Curious, if you pitted Russellville against Raceland, Beechwood, Paintsville or Pikeville on a neutral field today, would you pick Russellville to beat all of them? Any of them? I think Russellville is good, and they may win the state championship, but looking at their schedule, the only win of any significance is Butler County and they aren't too great themselves.

I think, unfortunately, the belief that Russellville is #1 is a lot of art and a little of science. Russellville has been expected to be a very good team and they have given the Ranking Staff very little reason to doubt them, but at the same time, they haven't played anyone to really gauge their strength against. At the same time, Beechwood, Raceland and Paintsville have played better competition and showed that they are pretty good teams, but what has any of them done to prove they are better then the expectations of Russellville?

Who would win head-to-head? That's the million dollar question. Obviously, everyone thinks those games would be great games to watch, and hopefully we will get to see some of those teams play each other. Raceland plays Paintsville soon (probably twice). Beechwood will get a chance against Russellville in the playoffs, and, more then likely, we will get to see a matchup with Russellville/Beechwood against Raceland/Paintsville.

I think that answer is correct and that's also why most think there are five teams capable of winning Class 1A.

The Top 5 are solid teams in 2016, and normally. Some may throw Pikeville out after their loss to Paintsville, but, as we have seen in recent years, the team that wins that game in first go-around doesn't necessarily win in the rematch. We have seen the same thing in Raceland/Pikeville and Raceland/Paintsville. The east is going to be fun to watch play out and anyone that thinks they have it all figured out, is probably fooling themselves. It's going to be interesting.

OPEN is deep. Split squads this weekend.

One word, "Machine".

Shocking that an undefeated OPEN team isn't in the top 10.

Bracken County still not top 10 material for BGP?

Tough crowd

6 teams could win it. 4 from the east and 2 from the west.. Heck I will throw a dark horse in there in Nicholas to spoil a teams chances..

For me they still have to prove themselves. I have not seen them in the last couple years, but last time I did they were on the bad end of an early running clock and starting a kid that could not have been 130lbs at middle linebacker. But they are obviously much improved and already have a much better season than I can remember them having. If they can beat Brossart I see a little more respect coming their way. The close win over Bath really hurts them in my opinion because Fairview a team that is barely clinging on to a top 10 spot beat bath by 40.

Williamsburg hasn't necessarily earned, but when you look at their schedule and the scores from that schedule, I think they are one of the top ten teams in 1a. I'd probably put them in the 9 spot above Fairview and Ky Country Day. But they will give Hazard and Pikeville a run in the region this year.

Another opportunity to compare scores, Williamsburg plays Harlan this week. Bracken County beat Harlan 20-7.

Food for thought for everyone. Bracken County has played a weak schedule, but consider this - Bracken County's strength of schedule is almost exactly the same as Russellville's.
