September 29, 201610 yr #2 rated Pro Style QB in 2015 class. Started the first game of the year and got benched for true freshman Jalen Hurts. No word yet on where he will be taking his talents to. Do you all think this is a problem for college football? A high profile QB gets beat out and transfers because of it. Has happened several times over the past few years, most notably with Texas A&M having Kyle Allen leave to go to Houston, and Kyler Murray going to Oklahoma. Then Texas A&M getting Trevor Knight from Oklahoma after he got beat out by Baker Mayfield.
September 29, 201610 yr Author Why would it be a problem? I'm not sure it is a problem, just have heard some college football say it is because they say it makes them appear soft and can't handle adversity. So it's more of a culture problem. It also makes it harder for coaches because now they have to recruit and do everything to make players happy to make sure they don't transfer. I.e ND starting Malik Zaire and Deshone Kizer against Texas because IMO they didn't want Malik Zaire to transfer if he didn't get to play. Like I said I don't necessarily agree with the logic, but I can understand it.
September 29, 201610 yr Go to LSU! They are one decent QB away from dominating. Seriously though. Not sure why kids think they are entitled to things. I blame the parents. You got beat out? Do one extra rep in the weight room, 30 extra minutes of film, another hour of passing after practice. Work your tail off to earn back that spot.

I tend to agree with that logic and I think you work your butt off to get your spot back. But he got beat out by a true freshman, so the odds of him winning that job back are kind of slim IMO. Barnett was the #2 rated Pro Style QB coming out of HS so he has high NFL aspirations. If he could transfer to a place with a offense that suits him better, probably a school outside of the SEC because of the transfer rule, then he is better set up to be a high draft pick and whether or not we want to accept it the NFL is the number one thing on a lot of these kids minds.
September 29, 201610 yr I don't think it's a problem, just something that occurs. These top rated players are always looking at the next level. Would I like to see them stay and try to win their job back? Sure, but with the short window they have I can see why they don't.
September 29, 201610 yr Too much money to be made in professional football playing QB to sit as a backup for a few years. QB is not like any other position where multiple kids play in a game. 1 QB plays. Kids want to play. If this kid is willing to go sit a year and compete for a job then more power to him. Worked for Jeff Driskell. Worked for Jacoby Brissett Worked for Russell Wilson Worked for Zack Mettenberger I could go on.
September 29, 201610 yr Only in American college athletics do we feel it is acceptable to make kids remain at a school if they are unhappy with their situation.
September 29, 201610 yr I don't think they should be forced to stay at a school but would also like to see some fight in them before deciding to transfer.
September 29, 201610 yr I can't blame these QB's. A second string QB at most schools is really like 3rd string because of these transfers. UL is lucky to have Kyle Bolin....and I guess you'd have to add Bonnafon, too.
September 29, 201610 yr I don't think it's "I lost my job" as much as its "this QB in front of me is a stud and I'm not going to see the field unless he gets hurt." He will be successful somewhere else. Sucks that he already lost his redshirt but he will have two years of success somewhere else.

Speaking of Jeff Driskel, I had no idea he signed to the practice squad with the Bengals.

Well he did start the USC game and stunk up the first half and then Hurts comes out and lights USC up in the second half. He basically did lose his job.

Never said he didn't lose his job lol. I said I don't think it's as much that as it is that Hurts is a freaking stud and the kid is smart enough to realize he isn't going to get the job back unless he's Injured. Backup QBs don't get drafted
