Written word is hard to decipher sometimes. I took it as defensive but I'm glad you clarified it. Maybe I was expecting it and saw what I wanted to in your comments. I have noticed over the past decade plus, any time anyone has a comment or question about Mayfield there is often a quick and unified backlash from the faithful. I'm not even saying its a bad thing, I really admire the passion, but it seems to be a common thing.

In the end, that is really all the matters, right? :thumb:

A Mayfield fan didn't start this thread and I think for the most part most fans will give honest answers.

It's probably a bit too early anyway to have a true feel for this team but I like what i've seen so far. Room for improvement? Of course.

This town is football crazy, it's a big part of our identity. We are very proud of our tradition and success, and should be. We defend our team ferociously, MAYBE too much at times. We are spoiled,sometimes a little cocky, and kind of have an US AGAINST THE WORLD frame of mind, but really a great bunch of guys from a town that doesn't have a lot going for it outside of football. Many if not all of us on this site put on those red helmets, and once a cardinal, ALWAYS a cardinal. I don't think I can even explain what it's like here, on Friday nights. I guarantee you that any of you guys that came down here or even met us ( the guys on this site) on your field, would enjoy the experience whether mayfield wins or loses. WE ARE MAYFIELD

I get it, and it sounds like Belfry and Mayfield have all those things in common. It is a beautiful thing!!

I missed most of the fun from several threads about my beloved Cards yesterday due to a quick trip to watch my favorite college team. I of course want to weigh in on my opinion of the defense.

 

Overall, I suspect that it will be remembered as very good. From the limited data from only having played 4 games it would look to be struggling. The first 2 games were such miss matches it is hard to take much away from it good or bad. The PT game saw the defense give up more than any of us expected in the second half after having played a good first half. One side of the dline looked suspect and the secondary gave up some plays but I think that the PT offense is pretty good. They put up 42 on Graves Friday. Against McCracken they also gave up a lot, most of that in the second half on a very hot night against a great QB and offense that was platooning.

 

If this trend continues I will worry but right now I feel like this is a pretty strong defense and may turn out to be one of our better defenses.

Take Hernandez and Mills. Those names may not be that well known outside of Mayfield, but realistic MF fans know you can't ask a Sophomore to come in and be as good on his first day on the job as either of those young men were on the last day they hung up their pads. Moving from LB to safety or moving to DLine when you have played LB since the 3rd grade takes a game or two to get comfortable. So in that sense, yes we have some spots that are developing. I feel confident the potential is there. Just look at who forced one of those safeties against MC. That kid is a stud and has future star written all over him. If you think MFs defense is a 'problem' then you better come play them now, because you will want no part of them come November.

I was really impressed with Kincer Arnett, that kid is a stud at LB. He hits as hard or harder than anyone on the field and seems to be in on every play. Of all the players on both sides of the ball who seemed gassed he never really lost a step....not that I seen anyway.

Mayfield's linebackers are the backbone of their D, all of them, and I mean ALL of them will hit you and I mean hard!

I'm really confused, first i read a thread about how Mayfield could give Trinity a game and then I see this thread. If their defense is struggling then not only could T and Male beat them but I would say they would also lose to SK, Ryle, Cooper too.
