Question for the experts

Featured Replies

What is the average number of receivers that a quarterback will connect with in a high school football game? What is the highest number of different receivers that you have ever seen the quarterback hit in one game?

In Saturday morning's 30-8 Ashland JV win over Raceland, Will Adkins was 11 for 21 with completed passes to EIGHT different receivers.

Understand that Will is my grandson, and I am always proud of him, but I think this is a legitimate question.

I knew he had a good performance Saturday in the "revenge win" after Friday night's varsity loss to the Rams, but it wasn't until watching the video that I realized that 8 of his 11 receptions were to different receivers. I thought that must be highly unusual for a high school game.

Thoughts?

Really depends on the team, their offensive scheme and the number of recievers that can actually play (including RB's). Although 8 is a great number of receivers and I love the fact that your grandson and his coaches called that many players numbers etc. it isn't unheard of. You will usually see 5 or so used for a team that passes the ball around. If you utilize TE's in the passing game you can increase that number to cover the WR's, RB's and TE's that are used in the passing game.

There are also teams that have a large number of WR's that will run a fresh group out there every other possesion or even as Highlands did 3 years ago, they would platoon their WR's every other play which would mean including TE's and RB's they would have double digit receivers with receptions a game many times.

Now with all that said, 8 is a high number. Your team is very fortunate to have that many receivers that can be used and can actually play. My sons senior year the avg for his team was usually 5-6 used a game that would have receptions.

Far from an expert

But I would say for most QB's who complete 11 passes it would probably average between 4 or 5 different targets at the HS level.

Completely Unscientific Guess:

3 to different Ends

1 to a HB out of the backfield

1 to a TE or a check down FB

It really does depend on who the team is. Eight is impressive, but I wouldn't be surprised if some times it could get up to 10.

But, some times I wouldn't be surprised if certain teams usually had their receiver number anywhere from 0, up to 2.

I would say that 4-6 would be about the average.

Pretty sure that HHS had a game just a couple years ago where they hit 10 different receivers. But they had a unique situation. They were extremely deep that season and they shuffled new guys in on almost every play. Sometimes all the receivers and backs.

But 8 is still very impressive and I'm sure it was fun to watch! Great vision by your grandson!!! And I'm sure it keeps his guys happy too!

I'm glad someone is talking about this. This is a good question. I saw this final score on facebook the other day and started a thread on it... (no comments) Impressive for a JV game IMO. I know that Ashland puts TE's out wide along with running backs. The question I have is did the line give him that much time to throw, did he just get the ball out of his hand that quick, or did he roll out or check down? I was surprised he wasn't used in Friday's game. I've had conversations with numerous people who thought the same.

I would think along the lines of the posts mentioned above. 5-6 for varsity games is about average. Again, surprised this many was used for a JV game. Job well done by your grandson. Obviously he can spread it around.

Your thread title rules me out @GolfRev :D

Why couldn't he ask a question we might understand, like what is the QB read progression in the triple option?

Forward pass? Don't as a Belfry fan.

:lol2:

You can actually check some of this out on the BGP/KHSAA/Riherd's Scoreboard by clicking on the team, and then clicking on the "Stats?" listing for each game. These days probably 85% or 90% of the teams are reporting stats to the KHSAA. Some teams report their stats within 24 hours, whereas others are 4 or 5 days before they're reported and posted on the scoreboard, but it's a pretty nice resource, for what it's worth.

I agree it varies from team to team. Some teams only throw 1-5 times a game and they are going to be predominately to 1 or 2 kids. Others spread it out. Depends on the offense, depth at receiver, etc...

Fleming County throws it more than most and their stats have been: week 1, 9 completions to 7 different receivers. Week 2, 16 completions to 6 different receivers.

You can actually check some of this out on the BGP/KHSAA/Riherd's Scoreboard by clicking on the team, and then clicking on the "Stats?" listing for each game. Those stats can also be a bit misleading though. Lets take the BG receivers. I didn't watch the BG game so I don't know, but how many of those receptions were from the starting players and how many were backups that played after the score got out of hand?

The OP sounded like he was talking about a JV game where the backups are the starters basically so 1 qb was used the entire game etc. If it was a Varsity game and that game would tell a lot more because the same QB would have been in for all those different players who caught a pass.

Definitely a good point. Once a game gets to the point where a team pulls starters and puts in the second string, you're definitely going to see stats like those I listed bump up.

The "O" Line did a good job on giving him some time, but Will does have a pretty quick release. He rolled out on a few of the passes, on others it was a straight drop back, or quick pass from the shotgun.

He does read defenses well and can and does check down. He has gone to the Manning Passing Academy for three summers and has had instruction from the Peyton and Eli as well as several D-1 quarterbacks. He's tall (6'4")and sees the field well and has done very well at finding the open receivers.

Of the 10 incomplete passes, 6 were drops (3 in the end zone) and 4 were just bad passes.

As I said, he did have pretty good protection from the "O" line, (probably better than Ratliff got on Friday night). However, if the primary receiver is covered, he doesn't break and run immediately. While he is an excellent roll out passer, over the last three seasons he's shown patience, and will stay in the pocket, deliver the pass and take the hit.

(did I say I was a little proud of him?)

Best of luck to your grandson. I look forward to hearing about his progress over the next few years!

I don't care what offense is run.

8 is a lot on 11 completions.
