It IS a $ thing when it comes to the week 0. Getting that check from Ashland is factored into our budget. I know the Pikeville Bowl invite was turned down for 2 reasons. 1. we were already under contract for Ashland 2. the $ made traveling to Ashland vs no money and traveling to Belfry = stay closer to home.

 

Anyways, the teams being looked into and close to signing will be outside the travel radius so all those, including you spindoc, will be happy.

Ohio teams are the best bet for something close and competitive. Raceland has taken full advantage of that over the past few years with teams like Coal Grove, Ironton, West, and Valley. I agree with the poster who mentioned Wheelersburg. That would be good competition.

 

I would have agreed with the notion of scheduling Belfry or Johnson Central 10 years ago, but I would want no part of the current version of these teams. It just wouldn't be competitive enough to justify the travel. Besides, I thought Raceland didn't like playing teams with guys from WV. :-)

Using the "money" excuse at Raceland will not work. How much was that inflatable Ram head ? Grant money pay for facilities because it is considered a "city park"??? Want to see a tight budget? Come to West Carter........amount of money given by BOE for football K-12 (other than MS/HS salaries) .......$0.

The Inflatable Ram was bought by several donors. That happened after a parent/booster passed away and we thought it would be a great tribute to him to purchase it.

And East Carter is not week 0. So, now you have an opening after the maroon cash cow comes home.

Racelands schedule rarely has a sub .500 team on their schedule. Very few schools can say that. Something ele to factor in, even though our district only has 3 teams, its pound for pound the toughest from top to bottom in 1A. We play our area big dawg in Ashland. Valley is year in and year out in the top 10 of their region. West always has atheletes, Coal Grove was always massive, Ironton is Ironton and even when they are down, much like Ashland and Valley, are a solid and hard team to beat. Lawrence Co loses the house every couple of years, but are always a solid opponent. Russell and Greenup atent push overs by any stretch and West Carter is on an upswing. We schedule one or two more OH teams and/or top tier Southeastern/Central/Lex KY program and its a tough schedule. If we can continue to develope solid depth like we have this year, theres no reason we shouldnt do that. It IS a money thing like Doc said. BUT, I see the other side to. Idc if Belfry or JC beats us 50-0, if we have the numbers like we do, we should start playing the more "title-esk" teams.

It has been brought to my attention that East Carter will not renew it's contract with Raceland for football. This is a growing trend. Boyd County dropped us a few years ago, Sheldon Clark revoked a 2 year deal before we even played. Our District has shrank from 4 to 3 teams. It is becoming difficult for us to find opponents to fill our 10 game schedule.

 

I can understand East not renewing Doc. This isn't a jab at ECHS at all but seriously, they can't be getting a lot from it and frankly neither are we. Hopefully, the Raiders program will build back up and then renew the series. As for Boyd, I have no idea why, other than they being 4A kept getting blown out by a small 1A school who was playing everyone but the jfl team against them.

I do agree on getting hard to schedule a fairly close (in distance) opponent. I like playing a tough schedule and all but I will say that "Every" game doesn't have to be / probably shouldn't be a so called "big school and/or super tough opposition". We don't want to play a schedule full of perennial bottom dwellers like another 1A school was doing several years ago but with people like Ashland, Lawrence, Russell and now in GCHS building back up ...we have plenty of good competition and imo anyway shouldn't be necessarily looking for the JC's and Belfry's of the world.

I don't mean any disrespect to the Ram program when I say this, obviously the Rams have been good for a long time, BUT............I'm starting to see some cracks in the foundation. When this run of good lineman is over things may be tough for RamNation. Skill players have been down for few years, JV is down, West Middle put a very fast running clock on the Ram 8th grade, West's 7th grade beat the Ram 7th grade.............again, not a hater........just an observation.

I agree with you, this game as it stands now does nothing for either program. Right now East needs to schedule "down" to help build the program back up. Raceland on the other hand would benefit by playing someone a little tougher that will only help them come playoff time.
