August 12, 201610 yr Posted this in the regular Olympics thread, but it got lost in the shuffle. Looking for feedback here. The more I think about the diving pool issues, the more I agree with the thought that there should be "permanent sites" for the Olympics. Not just one place, but to play off Bill Simmons' Super Bowl hosting idea, a rotation of four cities that have their collective crap together. Candidates for summer: LA London Paris Berlin Moscow Beijing Tokyo Given the shape Italy's in, I say Rome can shove off and play for the Winter Games in the Alps. I'm open to suggestions on the Winter Olympiad. Seems Colorado Springs should be one, somewhere in the Alps another. Montreal? Maybe Japan? We can't have disasters like it being too warm to be able to have snow. Third-world countries can forget it. In the interest of humanitarianism, it's silly for third-world countries to bankrupt themselves just to put on a good face worldwide.
August 12, 201610 yr I agree, I say just 2 Summer and 2 Winter cities, that way each city would host every 8 years. On the years in between they could host World Championships. I'd prefer a Winter games in Canada or maybe close to the US Canadian border and it could be shared. A second winter games in Europe somewhere. A Summer games maybe in Tokyo and another one in Paris. August 12, 201610 yr I believe X games uses the same sites repeatedly. They have had pretty good success.

They win,d get used more and generate more revenue.
August 12, 201610 yr Author Too bad the facilities in Athens are in ruins. I saw that same pic click-through. Seems like it wasn't that long ago. Doesn't reflect well on Greece's recent past and future from an economic standpoint. The Sarajevo spot that got turned into a graveyard was extra-creepy.
August 12, 201610 yr Greece is the only country that could make an argument of legitimacy for hosting ever Summer Games. They're the historical origin point of the games and could do a good job if they knew the facilities had to be constantly maintained. No other country gets through the politics of permanent hosting. The Winter Games are trickier.

Requirements: • Rapid train transit for easy movement of fans to and from event sites • Previous success in hosting the games without major incident and logistical and cost overrun issues (such as Olympic Village dorms not being ready, green pools, heavily polluted waterways, etc.) • 80 percent of needed facilities already built and in regular use, and up to code • Stable government

That's why I think Athens is the only one that could ever get through all that... and even then, it won't happen.
