This year's Perseid meteor show expected to be the best in years - August 11/12

Hoping for a couple of clear nights. The bright lights of the GMMA (Greater Maysville Metropolitan Area) don't hurt us too much.

We are lucky that we are in a dark area. The kids love it and look forward to it every year. They said they saw a lot last night.

I hope too. I missed the last meteor shower because of cloudy skies. Got all of the way to the top of the roof, the highest point at work and it was too cloudy.

I was hurt. I stayed up there for a good 20-30 minutes praying the clouds would pass. No dice.

I was just checking the weather for both nights. For now about a 30-40% chance of rain on Thursday. Then the chance goes to 50-60% on Friday. I'll post a weather update for this as we get closer.

Just check the outlook for cloud cover on both Thursday and Friday evenings. Not looking good to see the event. Looks like 50-60% of cloud cover for WKY and the rest of Kentucky is looking at a 70-85% cloud cover for Thursday evening.

Thursday night

Friday night the thickest cloud cover looks to be from about I-75 towards the east.

looks like between 50-60% cloud cover in PA.

I remember taking DLG's way out in the "Boonies" about 15 years ago to watch this, we had a great time and it was a perfect night to watch.

That's what makes this such a great meteor shower. The Leonids in November are usually better, but the weather isn't great for stargazing.

I remember the Perseids the summer before my senior year. My best friend and I stayed up all night, with sleeping bags in the back of her dad's truck. We finally fell asleep at dawn and he nearly drove off with us in the back on the way to work. :lol2:

Watched from 10 til midnight and saw quite a few but not as much as years past. The half moon was very bright and may have made unfavorable viewing. Went out around 1:30 for a half hourish and saw nothing. Overall pretty underwhelmed about this years show. Hopefully tonight will be better and clear skies again.
