ATLCat Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Let's say you have an "A List" program in the State with a rich history of competing for State Titles After becoming an established coach though with a handful of State Semi-Finals and State Finals appearances, over a 9 year stretch the program then suddenly goes 4-7 6-6 10-3 11-2 9-4 8-5 8-4 7-5 8-5 COMBINED RECORD: 71 Wins (63.4%) 41 Losses (36.6%) 5-4 vs. your smaller cross town rival 5 of 9 years with 5+ Losses 0 State Semi-Finals appearances 0 State Finals Appearances How many programs in the State do you see sticking by this coach in today's times? What would you be asking for as a booster?
Purple88 Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Great Question! I think 6 in 10 would keep the coach and ride out his stay. They get the added benefit of not having to deal with the coaching change and potential unrest of difficult early times with a new unfamiliar coach. 4 in 10 would swap. Especially if they hate their rival, want to get back to the title game, have someone else in mind they've always wanted to try and just became available, or have a spat with the coach over something trivial.

I am thinking it is right around 50/50 or 40/60 as well.... I want to see everyone's opinions though before I make like Paul Harvey and reveal "The Rest of the Story"
thehotsnakes Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 The reality of high school coaching, is there are a few schools where a year that gets your fired would be a year they name the field after you at plenty of other places.

What would you be asking for as a booster? I would ask: - Are participation numbers dropping? - Is there stability in the assistant coaching staff? - What is the experience of the young men? Are they "on board"? - How are the young men stacking up in the classroom and in the school? - Are they developing leaders? - Is there a feeder program and if so, are they nurturing it? If these answers are all positive, then IMO, the program is in good hands.

plantmanky Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Has the administration been the same the whole period or has it changed during this time or currently.
Jumper_Dad Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 (edited) Just looking at the info in the first post, IMO you stick with the coach. It looks like during that 9 years they were one game away from semi state 5 times...so they are close, just not getting over the hump. I think I know where you are going with this and if I'm right it was the right decision to keep the coach. Edited August 3, 2016 by Jumper_Dad
ThrillVille Cardinal51 Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 How many times did the coach beat Highlands?
Bluegrasscard Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 '0 State Semi-Finals appearances' So no Region Championships in 9 years - regardless of record or District Champion status. Is that region dominated by a traditional big-dog? Does changing the coach change that situation? If not - then done. Keep the coach and get him help and support as best possible.

Not other team in the Region has more than one State Championship during that time.

And to answer: Participation was dropping slightly but still well above average Yes, assistants are stable and loyal Kids are on board Kids are above par academically, some great students, some that struggle, otherwise all are getting the job done and the ones that do struggle are being challenged by the staff The kids are definitely developing as leaders and humans Feeder system is in place and above normal, but during this stretch it is a bit antiquated
Jumper_Dad Posted August 3, 2016 Posted August 3, 2016 Was all of this in the past and not a recent situation?
