July 30, 201610 yr I wouldn't blame either of them for objecting to the date, location or format. These should be worked out with the two nominees. Don't tell me it's too late to change anything in today's electronic world. And they have two months to work this out. They should not be up against prime time NFL football games or MLB playoffs, that isn't fair to viewers either. Just my opinion, but I know that this is the right way to do it for the good of our country.

It's going to be mudslinging the whole way. The Don will be bombastic and Hillary will be flustered. No way either one will be prepared to handle the other. I only wish Johnson could make the debates. He's no great debater but the contrast with the other two would be startling.

July 30, 201610 yr I heard that Bernie's people were complaining that she wanted to debate either during the Superbowl or the Academy Awards, some other big event during the DNC Primaries. HRC has really known for close to a year that she was going to be the eventual nominee, so I could see her trying to influence the debate dates to her advantage a year ago.

What advantage does a particular date give her?
July 30, 201610 yr Thinking out loud: 1 - This has been an unpredictable and often bizarre election so far. I don't expect the rest of it to suddenly adhere to tradition. Trump has already skipped a debate in the primary. 2 - Outside of public opinion, candidates are under no obligation to participate in the debates. They also negotiate the rules and fine points with the Commission around this time, creating plenty of opportunity for chicanery. There's also nothing stopping them from participating in debates outside of the Commission. I can see this leading to a stalemate where both candidates refuse to participate. Or I can see an "empty podium" situation where candidates participate in their own debates that the other refuses to show up to. Clinton will say Trump has made impossible demands she refuses and Trump will continue this line and say Clinton has rigged them. Both arguments could end up being right. I don't think the debates are rigged but the Commission is most certainly dominated by "establishment" types from each party. It's not entirely unreasonable Trump would want to negotiate it all from scratch. But I also have no sense Trump has any high-minded aspirations for improving the debates and will likely use this as a ruse to avoid the debates entirely. 3 - The debates offer a high risk, low reward opportunity for the frontrunner. I imagine whoever is leading at the time will be less inclined to get an agreement in place. There's little advantage to a frontrunner for participating and if the whole enterprise rests on the shaky foundation of mere tradition this cycle I can see it falling apart. Even if they have one debate I could see the remainder falling apart from there depending on how it goes. Or, hell, what if we end up with a debate between the vice-presidential candidates and not the presidential candidates? In sum, I can very easily see these debates not happening. I think it would be unfortunate, even if I find the Comission's debate format sterile and stale. We'd be much better off if candidates had to have a real debate with much longer speaking times, an empowered moderator to keep their feet to the fire, and could ask questions directly to one another. But even dueling extemporaneous speeches offers voters a contrast to inform their decisions.

Hope they somehow get cancelled and bump the election up to that time to get it over with. Let's face it, unless you pull a Clooney and move to Italy, you have to iive with whoever is President, don't make a whole lot of difference in the grand scheme of things. I'll vote like i always do, can't go wrong, can't go right.
