I've got a feeling that it's going to get much more difficult to recruit new police officers into the academies, particularly in the large metropolitan areas.

Yup, be careful what ya wish for folks. A lot of people complained about cops for a while. Once cops aren't there to protect the silent majority for a while, they'll be begging for the police to "do their jobs".

I think recruiting has already took a hit in many places. Between the pay, hours and all this recent crap happening, not too many people want to wear a badge.
July 30, 201610 yr Dallas had a big surge in recruits, yes? After the shootings. But that's one department. I know of more than a few where the applicant pool is significantly smaller than it was 5 years ago. Some bigger agencies, some smaller.

I'm simply saying that even after an incident such as this, people are stepping up to the plate to do such a difficult job. Something about what the Dallas police chief said resonated with them.

July 30, 201610 yr One issue is getting a number of qualified applicants also. A large number of applicants doesn't always translate into a large number of people that you would actually hire. More applicants than you'd imagine can't pass a simple background check of nothing more than the running of a simple criminal records check. Hopefully more qualified and diverse applicants join law enforcement across the country.
