My guess it's the repetition of a few on the kickoff/return teams that is the main concern. You don't see them as clearly as you do the de-cleaters but the continued collisions cannot be good for the gord. When the NFL moved the kickoff UP in about 2011 they found a 40% reduction in kickoff-related concussions.
July 20, 201610 yr Let the place kicker still kick from the 35 (isn't it?). Line up the rest of the kicking team along the 50 yard line. They can't start running toward the returner until their kicker has passed them (i.e., put them onside) or the returner has advanced to his 40 yard line, whichever occurs first. Receiving team can line up anywhere on their side of the 50 but can't block until the kicker has passed the 50 or the returner advances to their 40. I have to think about the onside kick question.

Special teams however, are the only part of the game that 200lb athletes who some can run a 4.5 and bench over 275lbs, get a 40 yard head start to clean someone's clock. If we were on the road, we would have to keep them awake on the long bus rides back to campus. I was just saying that punt coverage also poses a big concussion risk.
July 22, 201610 yr Should get rid of all kicking. Just let them declare "punt" and move the ball 40 yards downfield - a punt inside the 40 gets placed on the 10. Faster game. Less injuries.

Without kickoffs, that number sounds about right given the number of kids on scholarship who never play a down of offense or defense.

OSU aims to have freshman on special teams, we're talking high 4 star players. It's not so much a walk on job anymore.
