Has anyone taken the DNA test or worked on family tree research? I've done both recently and have learned fascinating things.

Is there a fork in your family tree?

My uncle put together a family tree for my moms side of the family. It included birth places, addresses and grave sites. Pretty cool.

I've never sprung for the DNA test.

We can reliably go back to 1715 on my mother's side of the family.

Fixed that for you!

I have an account. I have one branch of my family traced back as far as the late 1600's in Germany. Most of my family didn't come to the US until after the Civil War, but I found out my wife is eligible to become a member of the DAR through her dad's family. I also came up with a handful of pictures of my relatives from way back that I would have otherwise never seen without Ancestry.

I am able to go back to 1655 when the English side of my family decided being Catholic in England in the mid 1600's was for the birds so they went to Maryland in Charles County. A century later we came to Kentucky in the Bardstown/Fairfield area. Great Grandfather came to Louisville and haven't left yet.

On the other side of my family, one strand of the tree came from the Alsace Lorraine area. That stretch of land went back and fourth between France and the German Empire/German Confederation/Holy Roman Empire so many times so I don't know if that would make them French or German??????

I have never looked into this or seriously considered it. How much does this cost?

About $108 with taxes/shipping.

My son and I did this a few years ago...we were able to trace my wife's paternal side of the family back to around 1200 I think. One interesting find along the way was, a many times over great grandfather was a Templar Knight that was still a TK when the end came for the Templars. He was tortured before being released and accepted back into the church.

My mom has some research from my side of the family that shows we are very distant cousins with Gen Patton and a former way back grandfather served a term as the Sheriff of Nottingham :lol2:

Coolest old name I've found was for a great great grandfather, "Socrates Crattus Hart." Wish I known about that family name before I had kids to name! My wife probably wouldn't have went along with it though. :lol2:

What do they ship you?

My DNA results:

26% Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal)

25% Irish

17% Native American

10% Western Europe

7% Italy/Greece

5% Great Britian

7% trace regions

3% Africa

What do they ship you?

DNA Collection Kit and then results of DNA search...I think that is what you get.

So from what I can infer, "Western Europe" doesn't include Ireland, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, Italy or Greece.

I guess that means it's basically Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Luxembourg, Belgium, Netherlands, and Scandinavian Countries all lumped together? Poland too maybe?
