July 8, 201610 yr This whole situation is very sad all the way around and there is a lot of blame to go to all parties and everything involved. I had someone from my own hometown who was white two years ago get shot and killed by a cop, and there was no weapon on anything. It was nothing more than a local news story, no outrage probably because there wasn't to much of a story with it. One of the reasons is because the media didn't make it a story. However in the situations we seen the last two days the media is all over it because they know people will tune in to hear more about it, will go to websites and look at the details. A white live may be unfairly taken but that doesn't create the drama media wants so they don't talk about it much or as big of stories. Whites, blacks, media, everyone has had a hand in the problems we have today. Over the last two years there has been some situations I thought a place officer was justified and some situations where it was absolutely uncalled for. This whole situation will continue to get worst after the last 2 days. First what the cops did and now the protesting and killing of cops. With what is going on a cop now will have to even be more on edge wondering if someone will be like the protesters and try to shoot. Which is going to continue to make tension levels rise even more. Imo the majority of cops are good cops but there are cases where there are some bad cops and racist cops. Both sides have been very equal in the blame imo for the tension levels that are rising. The killing of people by cops that should never happen is wrong and the same with the innocent killing of cops just because they are cops. I know I am afraid to what this whole level could continue to rise to. It shouldn't be a black lives vs. White lives matter thing. It should be all lives matter. Both sides have crossed the line and it continues to grow. The problem with #alllivesmatter is that it doesn't show up for all lives. Only some lives. If #alllivesmatter ed then the outrage would be equal for LA, MN and Dallas but the outrage isn't equal. That's the problem. All lives should matter but they don't.
July 8, 201610 yr And then we'd have gotten a full report of his criminal record, his high school transcript before he dropped out of high school, how many baby mamas he has, how he grew up fatherless and hadn't had a real job since he was released from prison 6 years ago. You shouldn't have tossed in the "baby mamas" comment because now I feel like a butthole from laughing at a serious thread and a serious comment.

July 8, 201610 yr Should have shot him sooner...but it's California, so you never know what their screwy rules of engagement are. Also can't tell if he is actually aiming directly at anyone or not, if he was he should have been shot ASAP. Totally cool with this dude getting popped. I'd love to hear more audio of the cops commands. Seemed like the cops were not that close to him when he pulled the weapon. Maybe since they had cover they didn't feel the need to empty their weapons into him. FYI. I don't care if you aren't pointing the gun at anyone, if you don't drop it when told you get shot. Didn't look like they were close enough to tase him. Not sure why they were that far away before he got into the car to begin with.
July 8, 201610 yr I hate to think that way, but given the events of the past week, it's odd that he wasn't taken out as quickly as the others. Maybe because the police seemed to have this guy surrounded, with multiple guns in him? They probably felt more in control of that makes any sense. Another thing that I thought of is police being "gun shy" as a result of the previous two shootings. At any rate, you can't help but wonder, "what if he had been a black guy?" I give police the benefit of the doubt when dealing with criminals, but I still wonder.

July 8, 201610 yr Man Shot by PD in Mission Bay Parking Lot Sentenced | NBC 7 San Diego Jail Stint, Community Service for Suicidal Man in Police Shooting - Times of San Diego Lance Tamyo Arrest History Happened in 2014. Does not look like he had any prior convictions and not sure about leaving many baby mommas out there :lol2:. Appears it was maybe a suicide attempt or wanted the cops to do it for him.

I understand where you are headed with this...however...aren't these all factors in a societal issue ? Whether or not the primary discussion is profiling, aren't the conditions you list part of a greater systemic issue that leads down a path of criminal behavior? I'll give you an example, if my son had, at some point, been to jail for trafficking in drugs and it was made a public example...and the public example showed that he had poor grades, been a disciplinary issue and suspended multiple times from school, had learning disabilities, come from a divorced family, had mental health issues, been in counseling, had drug issues, been arrested for prior drug issues....and was not black... Would all of those issues listed be background information that would make the average news consumer go, "hmmm, seems like there were conditions that lead down this road ? " Just curious

" Just curious I have a son who has a record. He is a mild mannered individual who has never shown any tendencies of violence towards anyone let alone the cops when he has been in trouble. He simply made some bad choices on two occasions. If he died while being detained his record would be brought up right here on BGP and his death then becomes justified since he was a criminal and all.

News for you....it ain't just a black thing
July 8, 201610 yr News for you....it ain't just a black thing You sure about that? I think someone posted it yesterday, but it bears repeating... A black guy gets shot and killed by cops and they (the media) talk about his prior record. A white Stanford swimmer rapes a girl and they (the media) talk about his swim times.

A white Stanford swimmer rapes a girl and they (the media) talk about his swim times. 100% sure...re-read what I posted. The issues are systemically related to the individuals. Those that have had more issues in their lives, tend to have more instances of criminal behavior. The past background "normalizes" the current behavior, regardless of the race of the individual. The Stanford case has it's own background to support the behavior. The reports that came out after the fact pretty clearly indicated that he had ongoing issues that could be directly attributed to his behaviors. I never once heard about the guy's times, but I clearly heard about his past behaviors. Stanford Assault Case: Brock Turner Had History, Report Says
July 8, 201610 yr Finding isolated incindents to prove a point or an agenda is simply unhelpful to dialogue. We know hundreds of white people get shot by cops every year. We know there are how many black youth gang members who carry guns but we don't see thousands of them shot every year. Social media and the media throws gas on the fire in every incident to make it seems like shootings are on this great rise. Then we posy these isolated stories like see gotcha ya moments. It's isn't healthy and breeds the level of distrust in this country.

It's isn't healthy and breeds the level of distrust in this country. You completely missed the point if that's what you took away from what I said. The thread implied that giving the background after a shooting on a black suspect was somehow a white privilege issue...my contention is that it is not, rather a societal means to put the behavior into a framework of understanding. I didn't go looking for the Stanford case, I just responded to it. I specifically asked PP about a scenario and if that scenario would seem to justify a situation...in order to show that it's not a "white privilege" issue.

The distrust is already there and that is the problem. Trust needs to be gained and ignoring those stories and outcome won't help anything G either. Those stories clearly show instances in which deadly force wasn't needed to subdue and detain violent subjects. In each of those stories the cops have credit to their training. A legitimate concern is trying to figure out what makes each story different from the rest and learning the different ways to detain violent subjects. Whether people like it a lot of people only see one difference and they want to know why.
