Consequences and punishment should be coming from the coach. KHSAA isn't going to police summer ball.

Only during dead period and organized school games....

Part of the bigger issue is parents attending summer camps and wanting the games called like a District final...yet complaining if they are asked to pay.

 

In my opinion, those two things have absolutely nothing to do with one another. We all know that tempers are more likely to flare when referees allow rougher than normal play. Parents (like me) want the obvious fouls to be called so that it doesn't escalate into something like yesterday's event. AND... the most adamant parents are not going to stay home because the price of admission is steep. There will just be fewer people in the gym when they go nuts.

 

Also, how is the summer a good training grounds on "what's acceptable" if there are no consequences to horrible behavior? A lack of punishment is basically condoning the behavior.

 

Let me clarify a few items:

 

1) Obvious fouls should be called in summer games, however, these are obviously not regulation games so you don't get regulation calls. Parents sitting in the stands screaming out for 3 seconds, travelling and what they perceive to be hand checks typically don't fly in summer gyms.

 

2) Most summer games are more similar to AAU games. Individuals running and gunning, limited offensive sets and games that are just short of blacktop league games. This does not lend itself to good game management opportunities.

 

3) Parents who think they have a right to act like jack wagons anytime is a problem, however, during the season, when you pay your money, you get latitude for what you can say and still keep your seat.

 

4) Officials are not compensated game fees for these events and often lesser skilled officials are "training" during the summer gyms. They need as much opportunity, with less parental input, to learn as possible. They should still control the game to their best of their ability, but they, like the players and coaches, are typically learning during this time frame.

 

5) Summer is the best possible option as a training ground to learn what is acceptable with generally minor consequences. Hence the reason the KHSAA does not get involved in ejections from these events on any level. It is left up to the coaches to manage. In this case, it seems that the coach did exactly that. Kudos to them for doing the right thing.

 

6) The penalties for behavior (dead ball or live ball) carry much less weight in summer ball than during the season. Therefore the officials have limited ability to control a player with those penalties unless the coach is highly involved in the actions.

 

7) Adamant parents are ok and no amount of money would keep them away, so that's not a problem....those same parents are learning and demonstrating some of the worst behavior during the summer's as well....so sometimes the apple don't fall too far from the tree if you know what I mean.

 

8) And Finally: a parent sitting in a gym for free typically has a much different idea of an "obvious foul" during either summer or the season...during one, most officials have no issue with them pointing out their point of view, during the other season, they are much less tolerant of those comments based on all of the previous mentioned reasons. Parents throwing gas on a fire during the summer just make the gym more heated......

I bet Coach Mudd handles the situation with his team. He is a veteran coach who runs a respected program.

Bullbleep! The kid she went after is as meek as a lamb! The only jawing was predominantly from Etown's point guard, who elbowed, shoved and jawed after virtually every play. Etown was called for 3 technical fouls BEFORE the kid started laying haymakers on the most humble, unassuming kid who could ever play the game.

I have seen both players play several times before, I can honestly say I have seen the girl from Etown get a technical for slamming a girl to the ground and have never seen the Assumption girl play dirty. The technical on the Etown girl was last year, seems like she might be the problem.

Then that punishes the other kids as Sumo pointed out and doesn't necessarily take care of the problem unless they intend to do something specifically with the girl before the start of actual ball.
