40 times

What is a good time for high school players? Most don't practice running the 40 with the stance and everything else so does the 40 mean much to the high school football player ? Does weight or position make a big difference? I was thinking 4.9 and under was a good time but some think it is average what is a good time for different body types? Lets hear what everybody has to say about laser or hand timed

4.9 is rock solid for kids playing linebacker/d-end

The kids playing skill positions and defensive back would be better off running faster than that.

Kids slower than that might be better off playing d-line.

A solid time for a high school offensive linemen would be something between 5.2 - 5.5

A 4.6 is usually one of the fastest kids on the field on Friday night. Maybe in some big cities you'll find better. Anyone in KY running a 4.6 on Friday night is going to be seen as "speed" on the field.

4.6 is a really good time for high school skill players. When players go below that they become elite. It is also dependent on the kid, body type, position and what not. A 6'2" 205 lb linebacker running 4.6 is different from a 5'8" 150 lb corner back. Shuttle Times are really important, it is really difficult to take a snapshot of a forty time and determine whether a kid can play. There are a lot of 5 flat forty kids in this state that play at that speed and are really good high school football players.

Any kid who is running under 5.0 on an electronic time is a good time. SO many things vary with hand times and a lot of colleges that hand time you at camps, take that into account. Shuttle is more relevant. 40's is just a way to rank them compared to others.

Haven't you heard? A 4.6 is "mediocre" now. Come to think of it, I could probably roll out of bed in the morning and run a 4.6.... backwards.

4.6 Is fast for a HS school kid, but it's not fast for a 160lbs college skill player. Now if you are a 220lbs+ skill player, you may have what big time colleges are looking for.

My opinion when it comes to 40 times differ in regards to college recruiting. This came from a strength coach I met at one of the camps my son attended. 40 times help kids in regards to recruiting only from an eye opening stand point. If a kid jumps out with a good 40 the coaches will notice, maybe pull that kid aside and have him run for them individually. The strength coach did admit this really holds true for OL/DL/TE/LB/DB. RB and WR he mentioned that speed plays a more major role in recruiting, WR for separation speed, RB for speed hitting the hole. As for the other players, the 40 time opens their eyes, gets them interested. But then the body frame and film take over as being more important than the 40 time. The strength coach said, "We can teach them to run, but we're more interested in adding muscle, weight and athleticism" This was just one coaches opinion, but he seemed real genuine.

What kids THINK their 40 time is -- b/c it was timed by their HS coach (usually hand-timed; sometimes fudged to build confidence), or someone at a camp (sometimes fudged to make them think that's where they ran their best time), or their 'personal trainer' (definite self-serving reason for them to fudge their client's time to justify the $$ they're spending), or worst-of-all "my buddy/dad with his cell phone stopwatch -- is the reason so many kids are so disappointed when they don't get that D1 offer they've been sure they're getting all their lives.

It's all about the combination of BODY-FRAME & ATHLETICISM (especially in the hips) for the position they project you. A possible exception could be WR/DB if you can FLY (one of the 0.1% HS kids out there who have true sub 10.7 100m times)...but even at those positions, we're starting to hear more and more, "if he's not 6'0 or better, we're not really interested."

What if your coach public ally says a 4.6 laser, soldifies you as a FBS recruit, can be just as bad. Which was my whole point when this started from the other thread.

You need two things to get recruited at the college level, SIZE and STATS.

If the kid has the size/body/build, and the stays on Friday night, then they are in.

When you don't have the size, or don't have the stats, that's when you try to come up with 40 times and everything else.

Another thing that we did that gave our guys better times was the VOLUME of 40s that we would run. We had weightclass and took one day a week in the spring and ran a bunch of them. If you run 4 or 5 40s once a week over 5-6 week period, you will have ONE time that you run a 40 that is very good. That was the 40 we would use. Yes, we let them know it was hand timed. :isurrender:
