McGee and Planck drafted

Featured Replies

Hopkinsville RHP Easton McGee went in the 4th round to the Rays and Rowan Co RHP Cameron Planck went in the 11th round to the Mets. Congrats to both young men!

Awesome

Are they going to college?

I'd assume that's the next decision based on what is offered?

4th round is going to be really good money....probably between $400-$500k signing bonus. I think you'd almost be crazy to turn that down. Going to college would make you have to wait 3 years, and there's no real guarantee that you could improve your draft position.

11th round is a little different, and a much tougher choice. Probably still looking at a six figure signing bonus in the neighborhood of $100k. Not life changing though. College would offer a legit opportunity to improve your draft position and get bigger money down the road.

The MLB assigned slot value for the Eaton pick #120 is $496k. Teams can go over that or below that based on how bad they want to sign a kid. Teams have an assigned overall budget for bonus money paid out.

Planck was pick #340. The assigned value for pick #316 (last one I could find) was $150k.

there are no assigned slot values after the 10th round but I believe that if they give a bonus above $100,000 after that point that it gets taken out of their pool money that they use to sign the 1st 10 rounds. Less than $100,000 doesn't count against their pool.

I doubt that McGee would have been drafted that high if their were not some assurances that he was going to sign because I believe that they would basically lose the ability to spend whatever the slot value of his pick was from their pool if he does not sign.

Saw Planck twice and was very impressed. Is McGee that much better? Or, just more likely to sign now and they possibly feared Planck was worthy of a much higher pick, but unlikely to sign? Thoughts from you guys that are much more tuned in.

Turned down 3rd money.

Go get that money, Kid!!!! You are one Tommy John injury away from going from 3rd round money to no round money. Get that money!!!

I think you have to take the money. I understand wanting to play collegiately, but honestly you are one freak accident away from having it taken away. Actually Joe Magrane would be a good one to ask. He was on top of his game with St. Louis (actually led the NL in ERA) but accident/injury occurred and he was never the same pitcher again and was out of baseball in a couple years.

It's would be tough for me to turn down that money, and I would almost certainly recommend a child of my own to sign the deal. 3 years is a long time to wait, and it's going to be tough for him to improve his draft position. That being said, an education is very important too.

As much as I am a huge fan of kids going to college first, a half mil is enough to sway me to take the money. You can go back to college and it would be enough to pay for it and then some.

Good luck to him. Hope he goes big time.

On a side note, that is some ugly uniform he is wearing in the pic.

BTW this shows you that what round a kid is drafted is not always where the MLB teams sees him as far as value. Mets obviously thought this kid was a top 100 player.
