Basketball season for 2016/2017 should provide another exciting year. What should we expect from Boyle County? Remember, please be constructive.

It will be an interesting year for Boyle County. They will be led by juniors Bryce Slone, Baby J and Will Bramel as they look to return to the 12th Region tournament.

 

Bryce Slone and Baby J return with the most varsity experience and both will be expected to provide a strong presence on offense from the guard position. Will Bramel will take over in the post following the departure of Colton Elkins. While Bramel shouldn't be expected to fill Elkins' shoes defensively he is more than capable of providing a solid and consistent threat in the post offensively. Bramel, Slone and Baby J will also likely be asked to own the boards for the team and all three are certainly capable of rebounding the ball at an acceptable level.

 

Seniors Evan Shields, Dylan Frederick and AC Baker will have an opportunity to provide stability to the lineup as will sophomore Caleb Jackson.

 

Freshmen Reese Smith and Landon Bartleson also figure to earn some playing time at the varsity level and it wouldn't be surprising to see Reese Smith earn a starting role.

 

Newcomer William Enfield joins the Rebels as he comes to Boyle County High School after being home schooled. He is around 6'2" and looks to bring some athleticism to the team. Once June basketball begins it will be easier to see what Enfield will bring to the team but early expectations sound like he has a really good chance to have a pivotal role in the team's success. Junior Matthew Bodner is another player who very well may be able to find his way into the rotation.

 

There are a few unknowns about the rotation and the opportunity will be there for quite a few players to earn some playing time.

 

Boyle County will play at Madison Central and Anderson County in June.

 

This season looks to be a learning experience as Bryce Slone and Baby J look to grow and have some carry over from their strong 2016 postseasons. Slone has proven to be a capable scorer and will have a really good chance to become a 1K scorer at Boyle County by the time he graduates. I expect him to be the leading scorer for the team next year. Baby J will show growth physically and mentally next season as he and Slone take the reins of the team. Baby J will have to prove that he can be a consistent and capable scorer alongside Slone as well as making sure that Bramel is utilized in the paint. Depending on who is on the court I wouldn't be surprised to see Caleb Jackson running the point with Slone and Baby J on the wings. I expect to see some different things from this team next year but I can say that this team still expects to win the 45th District and return to the region tournament.

I could be mistaken but I think the turnout of freshmen is the largest turnout we have had in quite some time. I heard close to 20 freshmen came out this year.

Just from coaching against some of those incoming freshman when they were young and seeing them a few times last year. I would say that's probably the most talented class to come thru Boyle in the all three sports. I've heard that by the time the basketball season starts the Smith kid and Kelly may be starting on the varsity basketball team. Smith is so athletic, my buddy at work said smith has been dunking in aau games and Kelly I heard has became a beast in the weight room in the off season and is almost 6"3 they say he goes 250 and I remember them both being very skilled. Also the lefty guard is tough and I hear the new transfer Grant? Is very skilled. It will be something to watch in all sports. May be factory talk but this is what I'm hearing. Lol.

I'm a big fan of Wilson Kelly but I'd be shocked if he ever starts this upcoming season. Not because he isn't capable but more so that he will still be playing football when basketball practice starts and his competition in the frontcourt is already 2 years ahead of him when they both come to basketball from football. He and Bramel will push each other in practice and that will be great for both of them as well as the team. I wouldn't be surprised to see Kelly on the varsity bench and getting some varsity clock. I expect him to start at center on the JV team immediately.

 

I expect Reese Smith to start varsity quickly into the season if not immediately.

 

I've heard good things about Grant Hotchkiss. I look forward to seeing him play. I don't know if he will get varsity clock but I can see him dressing varsity and starting on the JV team.

 

Cameron Yates is the lefty and he can stroke it. I love his attitude and I am interested in seeing where he earns his spot at. He's another one I expect to start JV immediately.

 

Landon Bartleson is another freshman who didn't play on the 8th grade team last year since he transferred from Mercer County. He is expected to play on the varsity team immediately.

 

Hayden Bottoms is another freshman I expect to dress varsity and figure prominently on the JV team.

As far as I know there are only two seniors on the team in Dylan Frederick and Evan Shields.

 

The sophomores have Caleb Jackson who is expected to play a big role this season and I think Jackson Cox may dress varsity as they both played on the JV team last season. Other than those two there wasn't anyone else from their class on last year's JV team so it remains to be seen if anyone else from that class has shown enough improvement to warrant being put on the varsity team.

Those 3 guards can play with anybody.

Interesting developments taking place in Boyle County. Hearing through the grapevine that Campbellsville University has reached out to Coach Adams to guage his interest in their vacant head coaching position.
